Was curious if any of you with more knowledge than me could shed some light on a weird anomaly I seem to have come across re LSU Vandy games.

The last 14 LSU Vandy games dating back to 1976 have all been in back to back years. ie 1976/77, 1984/85, 1990/91, etc all the way up to 2019/20.

Could just be a total coincidence. But thought I’d ask if anyone knows why, as I thought it was very weird

I was down your way in May for Vivid Sydney. I was on a sailing ship in Sydney Harbour for the opening night fireworks display. It was spectacular!

Yeh it’s pretty good! Lots of good stuff to see, some of them are quite amazing.

I bet if you checked the schedule against Georgia, Tennessee, and Auburn, you would find the same thing.

Prior to the SEC expansion in 1992 and division into East and West divisions,
those 3 and Vandy were our 4 non-permanent/non-yearly opponents.

When we did play them, pretty sure we would have a home and home series in 2 consecutive years, like we do today with our eastern division, non-permanent opponents.

Florida is now our permanent Eastern division opponent. They and Kentucky were yearly opponents until 1992 and remained so after as our 2 permanent/ yearly Eastern division opponents, but Kentucky was removed as a yearly opponent when SEC added Texas A&M and Missouri, and Texas A&M became our permanent yearly opponents in the West division.

I thought this was intentional to do a home away like this against the non permanent opponents. Then rotate to the next one from the east.

Coincidentally, I responded to this while enjoying a cigar and drink on a patio outside a bar in Sydney...

I think you’re right, just went and had a quick search through winsipedia and it looks like this is the case.

The Vandy schedule sticks out more than Georgia, Tennessee or Auburn cause there was no SECCG muddying the waters for Vandy.

Thanks!

I've got great videos from the last 10 years or so. I always stay in Circular Quay, which is kind of ground central for Vivid.

Then you should be able to verify using Ole Miss and the teams in the East that aren’t their permanent opponents.

The only anomaly is 2020. We shouldn’t have been back to back but the sec gave the reigning champs the easiest schedule

It taking 13+ years for LSU to play in Athens, Nashville etc is ridiculous.

I think the latest double-dip was Covid-related but, still, that's a weird one.

It’s because Bama wants to play them 12 times a year and because Vandy doesn’t do bowls, there are only twelve openings to schedule them.

Wait... am I missing something here? Wasn't Ole Miss in the SECCG in 2003? There's a banner in Vaught-Hemingway proving they won the West that year

It was, and superweird as we played them on the road two years in a row. I don't think we've played Vandy at home since 2009

Thinking out loud and not looking, could the SEC have the non-permanent opponents setup in a snake scheduling style and Vandy was one of the end teams for LSU?

In last 20 years LSU has played in Columbia once, and we have two cities with that name.

When a team rotated on to a another team’s
schedule, they used to play in back-to-back years so each team would get a home game. They started spacing them out once A&M and Missouri joined the SEC in 2012. But the 2012 schedule was a “bridge schedule” so the actual current rotation didn’t being til 2013 and it was supposed to run through 2024. Obviously, hurricanes and COVID have interfered with some of the sites flipping or opponent rotations being disrupted.

When the SEC finally set on a schedule rotation for a 6-game schedule in the ‘70s, LSU’s permanent opponents were Alabama, Florida, Kentucky, Ole Miss and Mississippi State. The rotating opponents were Auburn, Georgia, Tennessee and Vanderbilt. That’s why LSU never played against Bo Jackson or Herschel Walker.

In 1988, the schedule expanded to 7 games and a second rotational opponent was added. LSU played Auburn and Tennessee I. 1988-89 and Georgia and Vandy in 1990-91. Then the SEC went to a 5-2-1 rotation in 1992, with 5 divisional opponents, 2 permanent from the East (Florida and Kentucky) and 1 rotator. Kentucky dropped to a rotator in 2002 when the league went to a 5-1-2 format.

That’s not true. LSU played at Missouri in 2020 and played at SC in 2003 and 2008.

Another game was supposed to be in SC but was relocated to BR because of a hurricane.

Yeah, we haven’t played at SC very much but it has happened more than one time.
