Spuds, you were doing okay until that one. You're just plain wrong on that.

Front Seven (Defensive linemen and linebacker analysis)

"Stats do the best job in explaining how this unit performed. Alabama had 193 rushing yards. No one really stuck out or made plays, a them this season for this crew. Ferguson, early on, had a couple of pressures, but that’s about it.
Danielle Hunter and Jermauria Rasco had one good play each.
Many of times, the unit failed to get off blocks or were shoved out of the play early. That’s especially the case for LSU’s linebackers. LSU had 10 missed tackles in the game, six of them coming from this bunch. MLB D.J. Welter struggled, too, with pass coverage. On two targets, ‘Bama was 2 for 2."

I'm a huge LSU fan. Welter is as good a linebacker as Ben Voogd was a point guard.

if Welter is a s bad as people say he is then I would bet Beckwith or Fiest (if he's playing ML) beat him out for the starting spot. Both those guys came out of high school with pretty good credentials, so unless they are complete busts they will beat out Welter for the starting spot.

edit: Les Miles and Chavis didn't get to be where they are, generally recognized as a couple of the top coaches in the country, by not being able to evaluate talent and by not playing the player that gives the best chance for success.

Kwon has one spot locked down. I think Beckwith and Fiest battle it out for the MLB spot and Louis and Debo battle it out for the other OLB position.

Welter started the entire year. I don't understand how someone can't beat this guy out. He can't shed blocks, lacks lateral quickness. I said last year though he'll start all year and he did. I had about 90% of people disagree. It's similar to the way Les handled Karnell Hatcher and Jordan Jefferson.

You may or may not believe these awards are truly merit-based. However, at the very least, they indicate the thinking of the coaches:

Mike Miley Leadership Award
(Outstanding Leadership in Spring Drills- Defense)
Danielle Hunter, Christian LaCouture, D.J. Welter, Jalen Mills, Ronald Martin

Toby Caston Performance Award
(Outstanding Performance in Spring Drills- Defense)
Deion Jones, Tre'Davious White, Rashard Robinson, Danielle Hunter, D.J. Welter, Kwon Alexander

Jimmy Taylor Award
(The comprehensive Spring Award for Outstanding Leadership, Effort and Performance)
D.J. Welter

I get what you are saying. In the past he played the best available player that gave us the best chance of winning even if some fans noisily disagreed. But in this case I think we may have better talent that can come in.

I thought Fiest, Louis, and Kwon were the best LBs in the spring game and I would love to see those 3 starting as a unit. Fiest looked great shedding blocks and getting through traffic to get to the ball and Louis looked great in coverage and edge contain.

LSU Starting Linebacker's Thread

Welter may very well be the worst linebacker I have ever seen wear an LSU uniform.

A few years back it was Rocky Duplessis being disparaged and called stupid, all he did was stay out of trouble, get a degree, and play special teams.
Now Welter is the worst linebacker ever according to you. Well once again a player who the coaches see everyday, whose performance good or bad can determine their own future as a coach is being played over all your other flavors of the week. Either you're an idiot or the coaching staff is, my money's on you.
The worst athlete to ever play a down and run through the tunnel while earning a degree is better than 99 percent of the rest of us.

It looks like the folks here on TD are in a quandary. If DJ is as bad as you say he is and there are better players that should be starting, then that fault lies with the coaching staff. This means you have to openly criticize Les and Chief which as I have found on this board to be a mortal sin.

Would Les and Chief start a player that is sub par and risk losing games and creating discontent amongst the team? Or maybe, just maybe Les and Chief understand their players better than we do.

All of you people defending Welter's play hould just watch film. I'm sure he's a great kid, but being a great kid doesn't mean you're a SEC caliber player.

Yes my criticism is also directed towards the chief for starting him.

If Cliff Garrett can catch on he'll play early too with the ILBs

After watching the game, no one stood out at MLB.

However Kwon, Debo, and Feist

Feist is definitely big enough to play MLB, but I don't know how much playing time he got at MLB.
Kwon
Feist
Debo
would be sweet.

It really doesn't matter, this D is going to be more fierce than last years by far.

What on that tape shows Beckwith was ready to start at LB other than people on this board obsessing with certain players/recruits from nothing more than some 247 stars and a H.S. highlight film?

Beckwith played high, stiff, uncertain and struggled in pass coverage from what I saw in the one time I watched the tape.

He will likely improve and he most likely will impress in his career but he did not look like he was ready to start Saturday.
