50-50 is about all anyone will be able to tell you here.

You are correct on that, but the biggest stat is Scoring offense 71, scoring defense 6.
That will keep you in a game. However, the years our D went from being good to great, were when they were creating turnovers. There is no better boost for an average or weaker offense than a D that creates easy opportunities. At its best, our 2011 offense was slightly above average, but when the D is handing you field position and scoring points on its own (as well as the special teams), then you can elevate that ok offense to excellent.

but I absolutely want a guy that is going to bolt. I want someone that is driven and is going to dominate this job. I want a I am mopping the floor today next week the fries attitude.
That is what I read about Pendergast
quote:
Pendergast is the quintessential coaching grinder. Twenty-hour days focused solely on shutting down someone's offense weren't uncommon. He broke into the NFL as a quality control assistant, where his job was breaking down tape. He impressed coach John Robinson when he volunteered at USC, who recommended Pendergast to Jeff Fisher with the then-Houston Oilers. "I learned a lot from Jeff," Pendergast said. "I really learned to think outside the box."
quote:
"I've been fired after a Super Bowl -- nothing surprises me in this business," he said over lunch. In that Super Bowl XLIII loss in 2009, Pendergast's defense gave up just 292 yards to the Steelers, marking the third time in four playoff games that year Arizona held an opponent under 300 yards. "It's just part of the business," he said. "You know it when you sign up for it."
quote:
Whatever the scheme, Pendergast says the most important thing to being a good defensive coordinator is being able to adjust your system and understanding your own strengths and weaknesses. "And," he says, "being able to fit your players in it and knowing how to make adjustments during the course of a game depending on how someone's trying to attack you."
Ex-USC DC Clancy Pendergast is fired up to build his next dominant D

I'd hire him based on that comment alone.

exactly. A DC that can call a TO and adjust to not give up the game winning drive? Yeah, I'm in.

1. Muschamp would be awesome, but I am skeptical that we can get him.
2. Pendergast would be awesome (just not as awesome as Muschamp). He's an upgrade, and yes we should make sure he's paid more than Chavis.
3. It seems obvious (but I haven't seen anyone mention it) that if Chavis was agitated about the change of coach clause in a 3 year deal it could only be because he didn't think LM would be here for all 3 years. Does this mean LM is thinking of retiring soon?
4. Does Orgeron coach special teams? If so, would he take the job with an extra title of "recruiting coordinator" and better pay? And if so, (and we get him) can he keep from getting us put on probation?

If this is your line of thinking, as of today, why not go for Bo Pelini?

Muschamp comes in having established a relationship with every major recruit in Florida. (*wipes drool*)

A concern I have with Muschamp is he wants to be a HC so I don't think he would be anywhere as a DC very long, assuming he does a good job as a DC this go around.
Pendergast doesn't appear to have HC aspirations.

Pendergast also believes it's vital to get pressure on the opposing QB. "Whether it's a running quarterback or a passing quarterback, you always try to get them off their spot and give them different looks," he said. "You don't want to be vanilla."
Fresh air.

The recruiting coordinator is Frank and his salary reflects that title. I don't think you can just hand that title out to coach O as well.

Who ese is courting this guy? Are we the only one aggressively trying to hire him or is this going to be another Cam Cameron "nobody wants him" hire?

I'm ready to see some 325 pound DTs, 290 DEs and 245 LBs again.
The Chavis D got pushed all over the field

The faster we get pen to paper, the better. Make it happen!

Apparently CP is interested.
I am encouraged that despite the strife at LSU, high quality candidates are interested and the process to fill this important position seems to be moving along rather quickly.

I agree. One major improvement by a new DC would be to have our LBs and DBs come up to make a tackle instead of waiting for the back to come to them. How many 3rd and Chavis did we give the other team a 1st down because of this? My thought about that is the DBs and LBs were not confident to make the tackle by charging forward. That maybe because of improper technique? So I hope the new DC teaches more fundamentals and demands it.
