The SD Chargers missed the playoffs a few years back with the #1 offense and #1 defense. Don't put so much stock in these stats

Quick routes, underneath, slants. What do we care? They are the ones killing the clock. Just don't get burned on the long TD's and everything is fine.

And let's keep in mind two of those games, Syracuse and Mississippi State, were close because of penalties.

Clean up special teams and penalties, we will be fine. There is definitely room for improvement, but getting Mills back makes a huge difference in my opinion. I feel like Jefferson and Adams have been good players, but they still have room to grow in diagnosing plays. One thing I like is that while we haven't completely shut teams down, we also haven't given up more than 24 points in any single game.

Our punting has been atrocious too. You gotta help your defense and not punt 39 yards from your own 30.

I'm not terribly concerned with the defense, honestly. They're good enough as is and I think our issues are fixable - Plus having Mills back will be a great help IMHO.

I'm far more concerned with special teams, pass blocking and penalties.

Yeah, He lit us up

The only concern there were the 3 TDs.

Of those three drives.

First drive bad kick coverage, start at the 33, 15 yard face mask penalty on 2nd and 10. 2 plays later 40 yard TD pass.

2nd drive punt from the 18 Syracuse starts at there 44 followed by a Facemask penalty 15 yards puts it at the LSU 29. Next play 15 yard PI penalty.

3rd Drive twice a 3rd and 10 stop was nullified by penalties. 1st time an offside gives them 3rd and five. Second time was a personal foul that gave them a first and goal on the 5.

I think cleaning up the penalties (or avoiding Ritter's crew) is the key to fixing some of those things.

Defense has allowed ZERO touchdowns in the first half in 3 games against SEC teams.

Honestly, I feel like we are giving up around 14 meaningful points per game when the game is in doubt and you can see the intensity of the defense. Now, it might also mean that the defense is getting tired and cannot match the intensity of an offense in panic mode. That would be a problem, too.

other than MSU, we haven't played a game yet where the outcome was in doubt at any point.

Three other games have been closer going into the 4th quarter than the MSU game was. If the MSU game was in doubt (and it surely was), then all of the other three were, too.

In addition, there is the KOR for a TD (averages 1.4 ppg) by the Gamecocks that cannot be charged to the defense.

In that case, it's also appropriate to charge one of EMU's TDs (the one after Harris was hit and "threw" an INT) against the offense, and not the defense. By your totals, I think that would bring it to 35 points scored by our opponents that were either garbage time or not attributable to the defense. That would leave 75 meaningful points, or 15 a game.

this thread is a quintessential example of how negatigers operate. it's perpetual "if miles doesn't improve x, we'll be in trouble." the key word being "if." it's always a case of missing the forest for the trees.

miles doesn't win every game but, he wins more than anybody not named saban. this has been going on for 10 years now. i'm not sure what happened in '08 other than the rumor that a dc that he wanted was not available which seems true since he landed chief the next season. his 2 worst seasons were 8 WINS. he could tank the rest of the season and a case could still be made that he's an sec coaching legend.

There are reasons to be concerned with some of the sustained drives we've allowed, but I'm not going to fret over scoring defense considering how poor we've been on special teams at times.

I'd also point out that every time this defense has needed to make a stop, they've done so, and that is markedly different than what we saw last year.

And I don't like to quantify short field stuff, because where does it end, right? I mean, part of the defense's job is to defend a short field every now and again. Others did, but I refrained, from discussing average field position - because that usually evens out - MSU scored their 2 come from behind TDs, late, on very long fields.

But, you're right to at least suggest the EMU "pick six minus" (ETA: Or "scoop and score minus") - which should have been a pick six (ETA: or scoop and score), but for a great tackle at the goal line by LF7 - is an example of a short field score that is not fairly charged to the defense.

And, if so, i would agree with the poster above who said "about" 14 meaningful points per game attributable to defensive play. Which isn't quite 2011 "smothering", but it ain't bad.

LSU has given up 2 TD's in the first half all year, and 12 in the second half. I'd like for the D to stay focused for a full 60.

We will really get our second test this weekend and see how the guys come out. This team has stepped up when it needs to, we have a tendency to play to our competition level.

We also rank first in the SEC in margin of victory in SEC games + Power 5 OOC opponents. If we score 44.. Who cares if they score 21..
