O is nothing if not overly transparent and he has signaled from day one of spring ball that he’s higher on Johnson than many on the rant want to believe. That doesn’t mean he is the “starter” right now nor that Brennan won’t ultimately start the season, but Johnson’s two victories at the end of the season completely changed the trajectory of the program going into the offseason. O has said as much. Plus, he’s the only one of the three that has some degree of a running aspect of his game. An undervalued element of Burrow’s greatness and one O wants in his QB if possible.

I have no favorite in the QB race and just want the best player to start. But I would not be shocked at all to see Johnson start in game one.

I think he’s saying Max doesn’t think burning down cities is peaceful or that men are women just because they wear a dress....but it could be anything!

Johnson > Brennan

LoL

Myles Brennan 3 games (1-2)
29/48 430 60.4% 4TD 0int 2 sacks 163.2 rat 74.1 QBR
23/37 337 62.2% 4TD 1int 0 sacks 168.9 rat 75.3 QBR
27/46 345 58.7% 3TD 2int 7 sacks 134.5 rat 45.1 QBR
79/131 1,112 60.3% 11TD 3int 9 sacks 154.7 rat 63.6 QBR

Max Johnson 5 games (2-3)
27/51 435 52.9% 3TD 1int 1 sack 140.1 rat 59.6 QBR
21/36 239 58.3% 3TD 0int 2 sacks 141.6 rat 64.1 QBR
11/17 110 64.7% 0TD 0int 1 sack 119.1 rat 73.2 QBR
14/22 113 63.6% 1TD 0int 3 sacks 121.8 rat 39.4 QBR
15/24 172 62.5% 1TD 0int 2 sacks 136.5 rat 31.6 QBR
88/150 1,069 58.7% 8TD 1int 9 sacks 134.8 rat 59.1 QBR

Even with Max getting his playing time as the team gelled, Myles had more yds, better completion %, more TDs per game (in fact Myles threw more TDs in each game, than Max did in his best games), same number of sacks, higher passer rating and QBR, (despite Max being the better runner).

They will give Max every opportunity to take the job from Myles but there’s no reason if healthy that 15 shouldn’t be the starter against UCLA. This will eventually be Max’s team but Myles is just way more advanced as a passer right now than Max is. He can put the ball in places that Max just can’t right now. Myles will have to play good not just average to keep from losing his spot and he still might lose it anyway if Max takes another step forward in his game.

lol Brennan started against vandy, state and mizzou man.

Johnson is a better QB than Brennan. He can extend plays and just seems more relaxed and calm in the pocket.

Brennan’s 1st start was at home vs state in an empty stadium and he was nervous.

Johnson’s first start was in the swamp in front of about 40,000 and the kid didn’t flinch once

OKLA railed that same Fla team with a freshman QB, so lets not act like Max was a world beater. LSU had 179 rushing yards, OKLA has 450. That's where those games were won.

Good. He's looked the most promising to me, and is definitely the last one I'd want to see transfer. I'd like to see him keep the starting role.

I'm no coach, I'm certainly no expert, but I have been a huge LSU and college football fan for 40+ years. I will root like hell for whoever plays, including Finley and Nuss.

Johnson has "it". I can't define "it", but I don't see "it" with Brennan. I think Max's father has been HUGE in his development. I know Brennan threw for 5 billion yards last year, but those are just numbers. As an example, I 100% believe we leave Missouri with a win if Max is at qb.

This is just based on the handful of games I've watched each guy play, and I don't see them in practice on a daily basis. I could be way off base. We'll see.

We're 5+ months away from our 1st game.... that's a loooong time.

A lot can/ will happen between now and then. Someone will separate themselves and/or earn the starting job.

The good news is - it will be a REALLY good QB. Whomever finishes 2nd in the QB competition will be a really good QB too.

But the idiots around here will find plenty to complain about, regardless of who it is. Let him have 1 bad series in the opener... "see, I knew the coaches F'ed up!" "Why isn't so-and-so playing?"

LET IT PLAY OUT

Brennan has been here 5 years, the fact that he’s even in a competition with a guy who hasn’t even been here a full year yet tells you all you need to know

The expectations between these two games were totally the same.

Open the season with playoff hopes and cant make mistakes.

vs.

The season is fricked, what do we have to lose.

LSU fans were still basking in the glow of 2019. Sure, fans want a great season every year, but even the most delusional of LSU fans weren't expecting a playoff appearance with the personnel losses from the previous season. Also, the quality of opponent can't be overlooked. MSU (while not known at the time) wasn't very good. Plus, Brennan had Marshal and Gilbert at his disposal. BOTH made great catches for TDs in that game. Gilbert went up and grabbed the "hail mary" form the 10 yard line. Marshall made a one handed snag for a TD later.

Florida was a MUCH better team than MSU. And, as another poster mentioned, it was as hostile a crowd as one could get last season. Sure, Johnson had no great expectations. But whereas Brennan went into the MSU game with a full squad and team ready to play. Johnson started vs. Florida without the team's two most physically gifted receivers...at a time when it looked like the program was on the verge of imploding. Remember, LSU was 3-5 staring down its first losing record in 20 years with rumors swirling that other big names may not be far behind Gilbert in leaving.

That victory was completely improbable and changed EVERYTHING last season. It boosted morale significantly one week after being destroyed by Alabama. It gave LSU something to play for in what would have otherwise been a going through the motions game vs. Ole Miss. It gave the program and fanbase hope that maybe things weren't quite as bad as they seemed and the future could be bright. That, and the win the following week took O off of whatever "hot seat" he might have been on (however small) and gave him something to hang his hat on going into the offseason to sell the future. No fans were thrilled about last season, but the mood following the OM game going into the offseason was FAR different than it was earlier in the season. A feeling of optimism had replaced apathy and despair. Now try to imagine what the mood would have been if LSU went into the offseason on the heels of a 3-7 record and a four game losing streak that included blowouts against some of the programs most hated rivals.

If Brennan is the best QB I ABSOLUTELY want him to start. But O's comment last week that "we only have one QB here that is 2-0" wasn't just a flippant statement. He knows and has acknowledged just how big those two wins were for both he and the program, and hasn't forgotten it just because another guy on the team has "waited his turn".
