quote:Yes, lots of hype coming in but nothing like the reality. I still remember Kenny Drost telling some guys in the old Gym Amory building before Pete's first season that he tried a lot of fancy stuff but wasn't that good, LOL!

Then you are remembering wrong. Stanley Roberts got all the hype in that years class. Shaq had offers everywhere but was considered a project.
So Shaq exceeded all hype. But he didn't have anywhere near the hype of Chris Jackson, Stanley Roberts, or Tito Hartford for that matter.
Hot Plate Williams was hyped more than Shaq.

You must be young. Shaq came nowhere near the college career of PP7, Bregman, hell...I could name 50 LSU athletes who have had better college careers than Shaq. He kept developing, though, and he ended up one of the greatest LSU athletes ever in the pros - not a runaway number 1, but definitely in the top 10. Now, if you're talking top celebrity, Shaq's probably #1.
Holy shite! This might be one of the biggest misstatements I have ever seen.
Shaq's LSU accolades:
2x All SEC
2x SEC POY
2x All American
1991 AP National Player of the Year
If you can name 50 LSU Athletes who had better careers than that, I'd LOVE to see it.

Chad Jones exceeded hype and the rest is just a sad story. He had such a tremendous future ahead. I still think of what could have been.
I'll remember one thing; the NY Giants took rather good care of him & gave him a chance.

Before I even clicked this thread I knew PP7 would be a majority of the votes. How? The dude couldn't man cover for shite during his LSU career.

quote:Shaq wasn't really hyped a lot coming in, other than Duke also recruited him (and Coach K was gonna redshirt him). He wasn't considered "all-world" or anything like that, just big and raw. Stanley Roberts was the big-name center. There was a buzz around Chris Jackson, but still, he wasn't considered to be a great recruiting steal either, coming in.
Shaq didn't have much hype.
Not the way I remember it...
Kevin Faulk is someone who comes to mind; he had the hype like Fournette (and Russell Shepard), and he lived up to it.

quote:Yeah, the original post referenced Fournette, so I'm reading the question as "big-name high school recruit, much hyped, met/exceeded expectations". And taken that way, again, Shaq wasn't viewed that way- mostly, he was expected to be a nice complement to Stanley Roberts, who was the big superstar coming in.
People are answering this question differently. If we are talking college to the pros then answers like Todd Walker and Shaq are correct. If it is high school to college (the way I would answer it) then PP7 is the correct answer.
Kevin Faulk was expected to be the savior of LSU football, and he produced- All-SEC stats, led the Tigers back to bowl victories.
Stromile Swift, too- he was hoped to be a superstar basketball player who would return LSU to basketball prominence after the probation years, and he lived up to that.

The Pistol. He was highly touted coming in with his Dad as coach. He could do things with the basketball that I've never seen anybody elso do, especially passing. Sometimes he would pass to his players under the goal, and hit 'em right in the face because they didn't think he could make the pass. I might be wrong, but I think he has the highest game average of any player in college basketball ever. He also leads the all-time college basketball players in scoring, more than 400 points more than the next highest, and he did it in three years, not four because frosh couldn't play in varsity games. He was everything he was hyped to be and more.
