Miles won a national championship. That was a good hire.

I acknowledged Miles was a good hire.

I stand by my position that he wasn't a GREAT football coach. I won't even quibble with the guy who said he was a "very good" one, though.

Bo Rein would have been amazing here

I hated on Miles after the 2008 season but it is a big what if, but what if Perriloux could have just kept his shite together and been the QB in 2008. LSU may have rolled off NC in 2007, 2008, 2009 but our biggest threat would have always been Bama at that time.

Rein. He seemed to be a visionary hire and he was hired in my lifetime. Sadly, we never got to see if he would have achieved greatness.

I would’ve liked to have seen what Bo Rein would’ve done!

If Les hadn't been so stubborn, he would have lasted a few more years.

His eye on interns is what did him in. He got lazy and complacent.

Dietzel was the greatest football coach before Saban.

That depends on how you grade him. He had two great seasons (11-0, 10-1), one very good, maybe great, season(9-2), and 4 bad seasons (3-5-2, 3-7, 5-5, and 5-4-1) at LSU.

I would argue that Arnsparger would be considered better except for the Natty (which is a big deal).

I also think the best coach hired in my lifetime may have been the one who never coached a game at LSU, Bo Rein.

He wasn’t great, but he wasn’t just decent, either. He was a very good coach.

People don’t give Les enough credit for stepping in after Saban.

Nine times out of 10, the guy following the legend is in deep Doodoo. It’s a tough spot.

The first three seasons for Dietzel was unsuccessful thanks to an acute lack of talent left over from the previous regime of Gaynell (!) (yes that's actually his name) Tinsley. By 1958, there was lots of talent on the team (mostly juniors-- back in those days freshmen had their own team and were not on the varsity). This continued to 1959 (a mostly senior-dominated team). The Tigers rebuilt, reloaded in 1960 (5-4-1) and had possibly their best team ever, before Saban, in 1961. And as always the case in those days, defense, and special teams ruled! Dietzel's DC was none other than Cholly Mac.

Also it's noteworthy that about 90% of the great LSU players from 1958-61 were Louisiana baws. Dietzel essentially locked up the state. They didn't go out of state to UT, or Aggies, or Ole Miss, and certainly not to TULANE!

That's for sure. I don't think there has ever been as much excitement about a coach coming to LSU.

Miles is underrated by this board.
He left tarnished by his excesses with co eds and because the game passed him by on offense, but Hearn a very good program and kept LSU in title contention for a long time.

If national championships are a requirement for great coaches then Coach O needs to be mentioned. Also Cholly Mac is not appreciated enough. He was robbed of the opportunity to be national champs by the Cotton Bowl.

We’ll never know. I KNOW one coach who wanted the job and who would have been amazing here and who someone at LSU dropped the ball on…Steve Spurrier.

Arnsparger was a great coach but he didn't like dealing with any recruiting stuff if I remember correctly. He was old and tired but a great coach. Everyone felt he would only be here for a few years.

I think Miles’ tenure at LSU without having to deal with Saban would have a very different perspective of most fans.

Crazy to think about honestly.
