Idiot.

Saban was NEVER going to stay in college without testing the NFL waters. Period.

I was shocked when he didn’t leave after 03 when his buddy tried to get him to Chicago.

The concurrent success that he and Belichick achieved in 2001 and 2003 made it impossible to not draw the comparisons of two guys that worked together and had so many similarities in approach and personality.

Every NFL GM with an opening was throwing cash at him and it was simply a matter of time and had become a distraction after January 04.

I don’t begrudge Saban leaving at all, but he did completely drop the ball in recruiting for that 05 class as he was one foot out the door and leaving us hanging until Christmas Day when he knew he was going cost us hiring Steve Spurrier as his replacement.

Personally, I don’t think he wanted LSU to have the success it did after he left and would have been threatened that Spurrier could have done even better.

He wanted to be the one that not only woke the sleeping giant, but took the giant with him when he left.

And let one of the greatest coaches in NCAA history walk away.

If that pot head Ricky Williams could have laid off the Ganja, we probably wouldn’t have to face him at our most hated enemy every November.

I would say Nick passing on Brees would be the answer to this.

Is that true? Spurrier was in the mix?

Had Saban made his intentions known sooner, it is almost certain Spurrier would have been in Baton Rouge.

Spurrier was out of coaching throughout the 04 season, and had made it clear he wanted to return to the SEC. He also made it clear he did not feel it would be in either parties best interests to return to Florida even once Zook was officially fired in October (he still coached out the rest of the year).

That left South Carolina, with Lou Holtz possibly retiring, and LSU, with Saban being courted by the NFL, as the only spots with potential coaching openings. (Ole Miss surprisingly fired David Cutcliffe and replaced him with Ed Orgeron in December but that was after Spurrier was already with SC as well).

Given Spurrier’s history with LSU, he interviewed for the job in 86 before Archer was hired, Skip Bertman’s comments that Spurrier would have been at the top of his wish list, and that he has referenced how good a job it is in the past, it seems like it would have been the logical fit for both.

Saban knew this as well. Spurrier’s next job was one of the biggest CFB stories throughout the 04 season.

"Good leaders develop people. At one time the head coaches of Nebraska, FSU, and Tennessee were all from LSU. That’s a crazy thought and something that doesn’t happen anymore. "

...and now the head coaches of Tennessee, Georgia, South Carolina, Michigan State, and Texas A&M are former Saban assistants. The guy sure can place his protegees...

Ooops forgot Kiffen at FAU

LSU was on the verge of decades of dominance, but Saban f**ked it up by leaving on Christmas Day at that. I’m thankful he got us back on the map, but screw that dude otherwise.

But he also hired Les and Paul. Both National Championship winners who were also consistent winners.

That's probably true. But even if he had kept him in 2004, it was going to be the same thing every year. It was clear that Saban was on an upward trajectory and he was bound to test the NFL waters at some point.

I've wondered the same thing even back when he left and he recommended Houston Nutt to be his replacement

Not living in the past. Just acknowledging a fact. This was an absolute embarrassment of riches.
