Smith recently earned an UDFA contract with the Panthers through a rookie camp try-out.

His career statistics at LSU are obviously underwhelming (19 receptions, 1 TD). Does that tell the whole story about Desean Smith? Or are their extenuating circumstances surrounding how he was used in the old LSU offense?

Did he have the ability to do more and was just extremely underused? Or did he pretty much max out his ability and what you see is what you get?

I know the Panthers love TEs that can block in their run game and god knows they need somebody (anybody) that can block in their passing game. Was Smith a good blocking TE?

I come in peace and thanks in advance.

Had a case of the drops early on, then was relegated to the bench so other TEs could be underutilized. Twas a shame...

Huge potential, great receiving skills,Very athletic. Tight ends were the most underutilized position in the archaic LSU offense. I expect him to fair well in NFL.

He didn't see the field because he wasn't considered a viable blocking end by the old coaching regime.

He's more of a jumbo WR, although he didn't test out great athletically. There's definitely some ability there if a team wants to use him as a pure pass catcher - that's his specialty and that's why he wasn't able to shine in LSU's offense.

Watch his high school film. It's a shame Miles wasted all of that receiving ability.

Actually he was much more a receiving TE than a blocking TE at LSU despite the stats.TE's block well or don't play much at LSU recently. He has some skills and worth a look!

Everytime he caught I thought "this is it the TEU area begins"

And then I was sad.

He was one of the many many on a long list of prolific Les Miles TE recruits that had us all super pumped because we thought we would actually throw to the TE now that we had this recruit. Of course, a Les Miles TE was used to block, and that's pretty much it. shite...our WRs were used more to block as well. That is, until it was 3rd and 9...then we threw it deep out of the i-formation with a 2 WR set.

All that being said, I don't think LSU fans are capable of telling you much about him. We barely got to see him. Hopefully he is able to create a nice path for himself in the NFL, because Les sure didn't do very much to help him get there.

The potential is there. The only TE's Miles played were blockers first so he didn't get as much time as expected coming out of HS. On top of that, LSU's offense doesn't exactly air it out much when compared to other teams

I'd say his talents were squandered here

Chill out. Some of you act as if Desean Smith was OJ Howard when he's not even close.

He was a man among boys in high school. Flat out dominated every opponent. He gets to college and doesn't get the ball thrown his way. I believe he is on Carolina's roster come opening day!

It will be interesting to see how they use him. It wouldn't surprise me at all if he ends up playing Tackle.

He was a victim of Les Miles coaching point blank

He didn't play a lot because Les Miles believes that the best attribute of a tight end is being an additional tackle. Desean was more of what John Gruden would annoyingly refer to as a Joker. His game is much better suited to any spread offense in college or anyone who wants a player similar to Jordan Reed in the NFL.

Jimmy Graham- Miles sold him on the fact that because of his size and athleticism they would line him and use him on the outside(special packages) similar to the way Payton used Jimmy Graham with the Saints. Well a couple of years later Smith was thinking of leaving LSU, he and his father met with Miles after the seasons break before the Bowl game practice began, SO Miles promised things would change and to show him , I think it was the Notre Dame Bowl game in 2014 Desean had one his best games ONLY because they threw it to him to keep him from leaving. Great Hands !! Going to be fun to watch his future, but Panthers I don't know ? Don't seem to fit his talent's. //

He's a 4.9 40 TE. His time there will be short

on one run Jamal Adams was 4.56 at the combine. That was a little short, also remember Jarvis Landry turned in a 4.56 even a 4.6 at the combine and fell like a rocket in the draft and that 4.56 speed is running away from those NFL DBs and he also returns punts and KOs. So D Smith 40 time is no big deal the kid can flat out run.

Agree with many here, has untapped potential we THINK but didn't get to see enough of him ourselves to know what was there (and what development took place).

LSU, where guards AND TE's are recruited to be tackles, but yet we have no tackles. It's the Les-Pickard paradox that a Yoda can't even give us a hint to how to solve.
