Jarvis Landry averages like 10ypc his lack of speed holds him back
That being said 4.90 at a pro day is a time that is likely over 5.0 in a combine setting. There are no TEs running that slow in the NFL, or even close to that slow

Thanks to everyone for the info!

Good hands. Bad 40 at pro day, but really not enough tape to gauge game speed.

He didn't test well in the 40, broad jump, or vert yet these people act as if he's going to tear up the NFL.
I don't like defending Les, but there's a reason he wasn't on the field that much.
He definitely isn't a NFL tight end.

Smith recently earned an UDFA contract with the Panthers through a rookie camp try-out.
Great athlete. LSU scheme of the last several yrs did not utilize the TE for passing game much. He and one other were the ones that got a few balls thrown to them although sparingly (i.e. very few targets). He has good hands and route running ability. At LSU TE's learn to block for the run game. He is way much more talented than what LSU used out of him.
FWIW, the lack of use of the TE in the passing game was one of the big beefs LSU fans had with Les Miles...

beatbama - if your a fan of Panthers be proud, you got a good receiving prospect in the mole Greg Olsen, Don't worry about the ones on here that are negative, there usually Miles lovers that feel if they tear down the players Miles doesn't look as bad for all the unused & misused wasted talent. BE PROUD, he's from LSU and he's a good one with a lot of raw talent and better speed than timed. ( I've also read where Ron Rivera has called him for some spectacular catches )

It wouldn't surprise me at all if he ends up playing Tackle

quote:You're right, man, but if you asked me who would be the better TE after their college career I would have said Smith. OJ Howard like Amari Cooper got developed at Alabama all 4 seasons they were there. Each season they improved little by little until they were both complete receivers in their senior seasons and unstoppable. I wish Miles had at least used his receivers like that, but he didn't and their incomplete developments speaks for itself. They had virtually no vertical passing game, and the passing game at LSU was so porous that these guys go into the NFL (Malachi Dupre, Travin Dural, Smith, Colin Jeter) with undeveloped pass catching skills that will have to get developed in the NFL if they make it, and that's not fair to them. You short change Smith's skills because he was an excellent pass catching TE coming out of HS, ahead of Cooper, and if he had the ball thrown to him regularly each season like Cooper did. He would be a complete receiving TE coming out of LSU lacking in only his blocking which could be tightened up in the pros. He runs excellent routes and has soft hands, his speed is better than that 4.9 he showed as he has a calf injury he's trying to heal from. He may not run a 4.4 or 4.5 whatever Cooper ran, but he should be faster than 4.9.
Chill out. Some of you act as if DeSean Smith was OJ Howard when he's not even close.

Don't sit here and act like Miles hasn't recruited TE after TE that everybody thought, "hell yeah. Now that we have so-and-so we will finally start throwing to the TE."
I didn't see many people saying he was going to be great in this thread. But to say he completely sucks, is just as ignorant as saying he will be a great NFL TE. Nobody knows....we haven't seen him play.

end of story.
he is what he is.
I find it weird that people think he could have been "developed" on some way.
he had 4 years to improve. he didn't.

Name me one TE who had a great career under Miles.

19 receptions in 4 years

Good threat down the field. He can flex out in some 3-4 wide sets. Don't look for him in 22 sets inside the 20 though.

Y'all keep acting as if Les underutilized him, but let's not forget Ensminger took over as offensive coordinator halfway through 2016. He was the tight ends coach and he had plenty of experience working with Smith. If he's so good like some of you insist, why didn't Ensminger use him more?
Colin Jeter is a better player, period.

I think the posters you are referring to are trying to admit is we don't know how good he is because the ball was not thrown often to him.
To not be on the field more in the LSU system means there were better blocking TE ahead of him.
IF OJ were on the LSU squad and Les Miles thought there were better blockers then OJ would have gotten limited playing time.

Well you could take all the receptions by LSU TEs for the last 10 seasons and ir still be underwhelming. The TE in LSU's offense was basicly just a Tackle.

I'm not going to say Desean Smith will be All Pro, but it's been nearly impossible to rate LSU TEs, because they DON'T use them in the offense.
I thought he looked like a good receiver anytime he was targeted accurately by the QB, and my guess is that anyone playing TE at LSU was at least coached up to block. I suspect he'd be viable as a backup in the league.

What the hell are you saying?
In 4 years, 8 of his 19 careers catches caMe AFTER Ensminger became OC.
