To allow the interactions between message board posters to paint the image of a fan base for you is unwise, better to go by the experiences of your Tiger brethren.
As for BGN? It's got it's share of nuts, that said when the story first popped up details were shaky. Eer fans aren't exactly new to having fictitious stories about us circulate, a few fans myself included (I'll admit I was wrong in my first assumption) were immediately suspect of the validity only because we've done the whole song and dance before. I think the majority of WVU fans upon realizing the truth are disheartened, and those who are still denying it are only doing it because they were hoping so much that our fan perception had turn a corner. The denials aren't done out of malice, more out of frustration, likely a "I don't want to believe it's true" type thing. Give it a week, BGN will get pretty self loathing soon enough.
Sucks, this really has dampened a great weekend, as has all the concerns over fans who I nor other Eer's can't control. I'm extremely tired of just wanting to be able to watch a football game and either having to apologize for the moronic behavior of the guy wearing the same colors as me, or trying to convince others that we're all not so bad.
What happened to this guy is awful, but guilting other WVU fans isn't going to help. The ones that will feel shitty are going to be people like myself who are never the problem to begin with. There are some idiots who take to Mountaineer field as if it's their birth right to make any visitors feel like shite. I always looked at it like this, with a war on two fronts, an awful economy, job market in the crapper, a country divided, do we really need any more hate? When I got to football games it's to forget about all the other real shite like that in life, and I know I'm not alone.
I offer you no excuses for this behavior, I just don't fathom any logic behind it. Having gone to WVU and earned my degree from there the last thing I would do in the name of my school is hurt someone. It's a sad state of affairs we live in.
Good post - I feel the same way.
It's sad having to continually apologize for our reputation and convince visiting fans that all of Mountaineer fans aren't like that. This story certainly doesn't help our cause, just pushes us 10 steps backwards...

"Helen Smith said her daughter's vehicle had no stickers or flags indicating they were LSU fans, however.
"It was just a random act of violence," she said."
This is just so odd though, are we looking at just some idiots who coincidentally got an LSU fan or what?

I hope that this turns out to be the case. Still doesn't excuse SOME of their fans' response to it.
Honestly I'm not surprised by their reaction to this situation considering their reaction to an absolute arse beating by blaming everything besides themselves.
eta: pardon the pun, and I do hope they catch the guy and speedy recovery to the family.

Amazingly some people on BGN are still saying there is no proof this happened.

Let's try and keep this discussion civil.

University fan suffered severe head injuries and others also were hurt when unknown assailants attacked them after Saturday's football game in Morgantown.
Authorities have not identified the victims but Helen Smith said her son-in-law, Marcus Mason, and daughter, Hannah, of Pittsburgh, were among those attacked. She said they were stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic outside Milan Puskar Stadium when someone threw a rock in the car's driver's side window.
Hannah, who is 22 weeks pregnant, was driving at the time. The rock landed in her lap, Smith said.

That tells me pretty much everything that I need to know about them.

If you go to a WVU game looking for trouble you will find it. If you're wearing opposing colors running your mouth after the game you share some of the blame. Given the attitude and 'smack talk' some LSU fans gave and continue to give on their message boards - wouldn't shock me that someone wrote a check with their mouth that their *** couldn't cash.
The people who 'beat' the fan should be brought to justice, but they're likely not the only guilty party. You have to use some common sense. I'd place money that these guys were hillfolk.

Maybe those posters don't believe the story at all, and that is why they are making light of it. Can you offer 100% proof that this happened??? Don't site the WBOY report again, because that report alone without substantiation doesn't prove anything.

I think Im just as disgusted with WVU by reading the responses on BNG as I am of this incident.

So it happened in traffic. Nobody stopped? There wasn't even a 911 call?

according to what i read from other sources there was medical attention (ambulance) but no cops at the scene. take fwiw. victim was supposedly transported from scene to hospital by ambulance. i think the cops screwed up on this whole deal

this post is quite obviously evidence that every fan base, every religion, every race, every neighborhood, has its share of assholes, idiots, and good, decent people. The problem is the good folks suffer from idiots like the ones who assaulted those folks.

I just saw on their board that they may take up some kind of a collection to help with medical bills. If that happens, those people, who weren't even involved or acquainted to the perps or the victims, will get big props and respect from me.

Are you serious? The media reports say the police are "investigating a report of an assault" which means that at the time the assault took place there were no officers present to witness it. In fact if we're going to be completely honest it's still incredibly unclear given the hospital situation at what point the police were contacted, were they on the scene afterwards or did the family file a report of an assault at some point afterwards. That said they must do their due diligence, since they had no officers present at the crime they have to interview witnesses, the accused, the victims, etc. Simply because someone calls up and says "I was assaulted, here's the license plate number" does not make it a warrant for the arrest. Chill out Judge Dredd, there is a legal process that needs to be followed here, the statute of limitations isn't 4 days so you don't need to freak out that no one has been arrested yet. If what happened did indeed happen, and they have the assailants information than they'll be fine.
You are trying WAY too hard.

Honestly it doesn't set you back. It's just embarrassing. It's not about football, it's some random criminal assholes.
I feel the same way about LSU fans sometimes but anyone with half a brain realizes a few bad actors don't mean shite to the rest of the fans.
