SIAP. Posted by Dellenger. What do you all make of the increase over the years? I know we still had some good players from 2005-2010 but hardly any left early.

I'm drawing a blank - who were some of the 10 guys who left in 2013?

- When you recruit kids telling them 3 years and get paid, don't be surprised when some follow through with it.

- Guys want to get to that second contract earlier due to the current CBA limiting rookie contracts.

- Even forth round picks are getting life changing money.

I want to know the list that actually got drafted or a list that were UDFA or 5th round and later.

those are the kids that should of came back to increase there draft stock...I know y'all are tired of seeing it but seems like Bama is keeping these type players on campus for one more year which in turns matures the player behind them and keeps a seasoned player in rotation.

Dont get me wrong not every player that is drafted late or not at all should come back some actually have made big names for themselves in the league but its not often

Now post the overall numbers, I bet you see a spike overall starting around 2011 (I wonder if there was a change in the NFL CBA around say 2011 or something?)

Also how many early departures were Red Shirts as freshman and therefore played 4 years? At least 40% of the 12-13 guys were

Why since 2005?

Thinking back from the 2003 NC team, we had Mauck leave early (understandable, but he did leave a year on the table), Michael Clayton & Marquise Hill just off the top of my head. That 2004 team would have had a real shot at repeating had everyone come back.

After 2001, we had Trev Faulk declare early. So did Josh Reed if I'm not mistaken.

Yeah, the two faulks, Freak, Dupree, etc. still waiting on that second contract.

There are plenty that don't get drafted, don't make teams, and don't play football anymore as a result of a poor decision.

You could argue that Alabama's success is in large part due to their ability to convince 3-7 rounders to come back. It seems like we seldom succeed in convincing mid to late round draft choices to come back.

Bama doesnt sell itself on NFLU. LSU does and that needs to change to an extent. We have to keep some juniors

Makes me sick we had 16-17 in 2013/2014 combined and we didn't win sh*t.

Also we only had 1 player leave for 2016 draft and we pissed away our 2016 season despite returning all those players because we kept Miles around who botched 2 of the first 4 games.

I may be mistaken, but I thought LSU had a bunch declare early in 12. Esp after the title game fiasco. Didn't Anthony Johnson declare and not get drafted? Just thought a hell of a lot more than 3. Was under the impression that 12,13,14 we lost a ton each year

I would like to see a comparison with other Top programs during same time span. Alabama, Clemson, Florida, Ohio st, Oklahoma, Florida st. USC, Texas

After the 2011 season only Brockers, Claiborne and Randle declared early IIRC. The big group, which someone posted above, was after the 2012 season for the 2013 draft.

Which is why so many folks were excited for the 2012 season, Mettenberger vs. Jefferson/Lee, and returned all those big name players (except Mathieu who sat out whole season). Only to finish a disappointing 10-3 (loss to Clemson in bowl game) and watch 6 players get chosen in the first 3 rounds in the 2013 draft.

This is why kids are leaving early.

TLDR: NFL CBA changed things. Kids are chasing the second contract.

quote:

Ever since the last collective bargaining agreement instituted a rookie salary cap three years ago, it's largely become a chase for that second contract. The thinking is the quicker a player gets to that second (uncapped) deal the quicker he gets paid.

Rookie contracts are set at four years. First-round contracts contain an option for a fifth year. Free agents sign three-year deals. "With the change of the CBA two years ago, [the message was] 'Let's not give these first-time draftees all this money and this big guarantee before they've even made the team,' " former Kansas City Chiefs GM Carl Peterson said. "Give that money to the guys who earned it."

^^^ This. I have no problem with the whole NFLSU thing, BUT that has become too much of a selling point, imo. Alabama is right up there with sending players to the pros, but the way we push it at LSU it's a damn near foregone conclusion that you come here for 3 years and leave (if you're going to get drafted high). If you're like a Jamal Adams or Leonard Fournette, sure - we all know you're going to leave after 3 years and they'd be stupid not to - but for some that are on the fence it's like they feel an extra push to leave after 3 years because NFLSU.

So your logic is that if they came back to school they would have improved their draft grade and become better NFL players. Total assumption on your part.
