I wonder how many quit next year. He averages 2 or 3 a year.

Listen, I get whey your saying

but if there is a direct relationship between NIL and Success, and there appears to be one, I would try that route first before firing the coach

He's been here 3 years. NIL has been legal all three of those years. There has been no prohibition on donating to the basketball program. So why is the NIL budget so incredibly low? (if you actually believe that BS). Has Woodward been using USAID to distribute the money elsewhere? If not, then logic would suggest the money is low because the donors aren't donating, right? If that is the case, then why all of a sudden are the donors going to start doing something they have been reluctant to do for 3 years? Especially coming off yet another losing season?

"Hey guys. I know you haven't given any money over the last three seasons. But what if I told you there was an LSU tote bag and prime seating for the hot dog air invasion in it for you if you throw in a few hundred K?"

quote:

Take the best coach in the country and give him the worst NIL money in the conference and he isn’t winning the conference.

No one is even asking him to win the conference. It would just be nice if he would win a bit more than 28% of his games against SEC opponents?

Also, how much do you think it costs to bring in big time transfers from schools such as Wyoming, NW Missouri St, NW Florida St College, Indiana St? Because that is what comprises the Drake University basketball roster...who, like LSU, beat Kansas St this season and, unlike LSU, also beat Vanderbilt. A Drake program that is currently ranked TWENTY THREE (23) spots higher than LSU in the NET ratings and has the exact same amount of Q1/Q2 wins as LSU.

LSU just isn't winning the McMatchups on the court or the bench.

Exactly, this just seems like playing games through media. Floating an excuse for fans to latch onto. You can elevate the talent but if you’re not playing good basketball you’re going to be a loser. Look at McMahon’s seasons, top 17 class year 1, we finish 2-16. Last season class ranked in the 40s we go 9-9. This year 14th ranked class were 2-10. Where’s the correlation?

but if you do not believe it’s a problem Ole Miss and State have NIL budgets of $5M and LSU $2M you are clueless.

Matt McMahon is already in year 3 and has an abominably bad record in SEC play next to clearly below .500 record overall here

quote:

Even if McMahon is fired, we aren’t getting a quality coach with that budget.

IDK we threw a (hindsight 20/20) really REALLY bad buyout contract at McMahon and his tenure hasn't worked out so now we basically mortgaged our future and lost yet we're doubling down to cement our inevitable irrelevance in the sport, God bless America.

ETA: as Wade proved, you hire the right coach who will generate excitement and interest in the program from the donors, the money will come and, now, the NIL budget. Thing is, outside the AD pledging more NIL for 2025-26 and effectively doubling down on this hire, Matt McMahon currently does NOTHING to generate anything for this program instead of apathy. He does recruit high school talent well but his schtick may be running thin if we continue losing this far in.

This is basically the AD admitting that it doesn't matter that McMahon sucks at coaching, if we spend purportedly as much as the top programs, we'll win as if he completely forgot us getting blown out by a med Texas team, losing to Vanderbilt AT HOME, and blowing a 11-point lead to Ole Miss and lose. How is throwing money at the problem going to abate bad coaching?

quote:

Blaming the coach alone is a total cop out.

He's the one with the big buyout and millions, the buck stops with him!

So...
It sounds like somebody in AD discovered the spending money on NIL is helpful to secure better talent. AND, better talent could lead to better performance.
This is a breakthrough.
Its February, 2025.
Our AD seems to be on the cutting edge.

Can’t wait to buy another roster full of Dji Baileys, undersized guards who can’t compete at this level and bigs with oven mits for hands. Guy can’t coach and his talent evals are worse. Just end it!

Sucks. Should've just hired a cheap mercenary to get through a year or two once he decided to move on from WW. Then let the dust settle and then used the 7 Year Woodward Bag™, as he is wont to do, to hire a legit candidate.

We’ll probably play another wussy arse non conference home schedule just to stockpile some cheap wins only to implode by mid January. I hate it.

Drake doesn't even have a freshman in their rotation. If you strictly want to reload by transfer and not recruit ever then that may be the way to go but this year LSU has 4 freshmen and a Jr that hadn't hardly played until this year and a So getting major minutes. No other SEC team even comes close. Now you can blame Mcmahon for that but that is what we have been playing with.

One less sport to worry about watching until Fat Scott is forced to make a change.

Hopefully wasting these donors money next season doesn't scare them off ponying up for the next coach.

Most recent thing I could find. $1.5M profit for 2023 FY.

I found this but not the official report PDF, though admittedly I did not look any further.

NOLA.com - Here's how much money LSU football, other sports made during the 2024 fiscal year
BY WILSON ALEXANDER | Staff writer Feb 11, 2025

The only other LSU sport to turn a profit was men’s basketball, which finished with a $1.03 million profit. Ticket sales and contributions dipped slightly during coach Matt McMahon’s second season, causing a smaller profit than the year before ($1.34 million), but the sport remained in the black for the third straight year.

Woodward has tied his future to McMahons IMO. If the basketball program is crap once again next year LSU needs to move on from Woodward as AD. There is no excuse for not firing MM after this pathetic season.
