LSU defensive and offensive backups Scott Long expects to emerge this season
DEFENSE:

LB Michael Divinity - logging snaps in nine games as a freshman. Corey Thompson starting at the F linebacker spot, but with Divinity’s athleticism and play-making ability, Thompson may have a hard time remaining at the top of the depth chart.

LBs Ray Thornton and/or K’Lavon Chaisson - We have redshirt freshman Ray Thornton listed second on our unofficial depth chart behind Key but everything we’ve heard about true freshman K’Lavon Chaisson indicates that is going to be very hard to keep off the field.

S Grant Delpit - It’s a little early to peg anybody as the next Jamal Adams, but Orgeron didn’t exactly shy away from that notion following the spring game. recorded four tackles and a pass breakup/near interception, prompting Orgeron to say “He’s physical. He’s very fluid. He moves well back there. He’s a little bit like Jamal Adams, to be honest with you.”

OFFENSE:

TE Caleb Roddy - Sophomore Caleb Roddy could buck that trend under new offensive coordinator Matt Canada as Roddy transitions to the position after spending most of his career at Denham Springs High on the other side of the ball. Canada’s penchant for mixing things up could mesh well with a freakish athlete like Roddy, who measured at 6-5 and 276 pounds for the spring game.

WR Stephen Sullivan - The largest pure receiver (6-6, 235) on the roster, keep an eye on Sullivan in early-season red-zone situations because that’s where his size and skill could make him an inviting target for Etling in matchups with smaller cornerbacks.

RB Darrel Williams - with a slimmed-down and more motivated than ever Williams stepping up the depth chart, it’s conceivable the Tigers could be even better in the backfield than a year ago. How can that be? Because Williams is a back who contrasts Guice much more than Guice did Leonard Fournette. Mixed with Canada’s potential to diversify, that makes the backfield more challenging for defenses.

C Lloyd Cushenberry - Cushenberry might just be the kind of emerging presence who could serve that role. Cushenberry is talented enough to seamlessly step in at center if Grimes opts to slide Will Clapp from his starting spot there to another spot on the line,

Just wait...someone will be on here soon to try and nip optimism in the bud...they will remind us how awful the head coach is that coaches these potential stars...or some bs like that...then proceed to giving us FACTS of how O failed at OM...as if that is the same situation he is in now...lol

No way we are better in the backfield after losing Leonard. Ridiculous. Are we very good? Yes. Better? No way

I agree with this up to a point. I wouldn't say he's awful, just unproven to be a winner. However, I'm just glad to see some actual on the field football talk instead of some crap about dreams or how Bama gets all the breaks.

Yeah I'm not sure what the author was thinking there.

Fournette/Guice is a better backfield than Guice/Williams and there's really no doubt about that. That was a strange argument about "contrast" in running styles making the backfield better.

Can't wait, he's got Calvin Johnson size and he's faster than most people think.

the argument is are they a better duo that Fournette/Guice LAST YEAR. I would say that is definitely a possibility seeing as how Fournette played hurt all year.

Gordy said to be on the lookout for Thornton and Rashard Lawrence, both had big springs and ready to make the jump

Too bad Jazz Ferguson couldn't keep his shite together. If he ever does, he'll be on someones NFL roster one day.

I'm super excited about Delpit and Divinity. They remind me so much of of Jamal and Kwon Alexander.

I met his parents, and what I'm assuming was other family members considering they were wearing jerseys with his name, last season on my walk to TS before a game. Told his pops I couldn't wait to see RT on the field, and he said Ray was putting in the work and would shine when he got his opportunity, and I agree with him. I think our DL/Edge Rushers are going to dominate this year, and for at least the next few years.

They still combined for 2100 yds and 23 TDs. Williams is pretty good and Guice is elite, but that's a terrifyingly talented combination to replace.

Exciting group of names. Ray Thornton is a guy I've somewhat overlooked, think he's gonna be a force on passing downs.

I really like the bones of the offense. I think the running game with Guice and Williams will be better than last year because the wicked witch is gone and long live Canada. I feel our offense will have a chance to outperform critics. A good offense will only help a top 5 defense improve.

Yea give me another glass of kool aid....

Well, it was his opinion. But I can see where he is coming from. He did mention OC Canada's diversity as being one reason it could be better (not sure I copied that into my post).

The one thing that came to mind for me when I first read it is that he specifically mentions last season. As great as LF is, I don't think he was ever close to 100% last season.

Canada's offense combined with multiple healthy RB's including LF's lil bro, I could see it being more productive.

I think I have seen where Canada has received credit for developing RB's into to draft picks.
