There's another defensive stat that concerns me, and it's untypical of LSU.

That's takeaways. LSU has had no fumble recoveries or INTs since the first game, and are underwater in that category for the season. Not encouraging.

Points per game is more relevant- never seen yards per game on a score board !

Based on what???????

Based on the fact that Texas shredded the LSU defense in the second half. And Northwestern passed at will in the first half. I would say Bama's offense is as good, or better, than Texas at QB and WR. They damn sure are better at RB, so that's another added deminson.

I'm not even going to sit here and compare Bama to NW. That's self explanatory.

So, using what we have seen other offenses do, I would say that right now Bama's offense would give us serious trouble.

Ga Southern scored 32 points yesterday against Minnesota

That doesn't really mean much. If both LSU and Minnesota both know that GA Southern will not pose a threat to pass, who has the better athletes to line up a shut down the run better?

I want the normal dominating defense to go with the offense.

Agreed.

This is what I've tried to tell people. The game is not what it used to be. This is just new to our fans. They don't understand.

You are probably right, but I dont want to turn into the Big 12.

Not very bad either. As op pointed out we’re in the midddle of the current top 6 right now. We definitely need to continue to get better, but I’m sure all teams feel their defense isn’t a finished product at this point. I’m not overly worried especially when we have a top flight offense.

The only other ones besides LSU that has played a team with a pulse is Clemson.
There are some things that our D needs to clean up, but we will be alright. We know we can man-up on coverage, we just got to be able to not blow zone coverages.
The advances in O philosophy, along with rules favoring the O, teams will get yards now days.
The NSU QB held the ball for an average of 2.5 seconds before throwing. This makes it hard to get to the QB under any circumstances.
When we can nail down the zone coverage that will open up the blitz packages.
There is a lot of talent in the DBs, but there is also a lot of youth. They will be lights out by the time we hit the strength of our schedule.

1. The offense is scoring too fast and too often on most drives. We haven't found that perfect mixture of speed on the scoring drives to rest the defense. That's my take on most of our defensive possessions so far.

Uhh, that certainly was not the case in the first half this week.

First half drives:

NWST: 11 Plays, 40 yards, 3 First Downs (Turnover on downs)
LSU: 10 plays, 4 min. (FG)
NWST: 8 plays, 75 yards, 3 first downs (TD)
LSU: 8 plays, 2.5 min, (TD) (end of first quarter stoppage included)
NWST: 3 plays (3 and-out)
LSU: 7 plays, 2:44 min, (TD)
NWST: 6 plays, 75 yards, 3 first downs (TD)

So, on NWST's first two possessions of the game, separated by a 4 minute LSU drive, they gained 115 yards and 6 first downs. Their second TD came after a nearly 3 minute and 7 play LSU drive.

The "scoring too fast" excuse might be true of 4th quarter drives when the defense is gassed, but there's no excuse for what LSU was giving up in the first half on saturday.

I would hope so but it also shows that our defense did play well vs GS and that they aren't as bad as they looked
