LSU Brand

I know it gets brought up here all the time. Toonces.
Who specifically thought it was a good idea to change the original logos? I was hoping toonces slowly dies out but it seems to me it is seeping into the athletic program and becoming our official brand. I think it is down right embarrassing to have this as our logo. Who is in charge of brands and the toonces logos? Does it have an expiration date? Who do I write to discuss changes?

Why is it such a big deal to you?

Went to LSU. All family went to LSU. And I follow everything LSU. That symbol is awful looking and think it is embarrassing to have it as my schools symbol. I am also tired of seeing it with backward hats and jabroni's rocking the shite out of it thinking it's the shite.
Do you personally like it?

Phoenix Designs in New York City.
I had the pleasure of meeting the person who worked on the logo and design at the Newark airport in 2004. Gave me a copy of one of the internal proposals with the logo info on it.

I wish you would have burned all his designs.

I can understand that but look past the logo and focus on the teams.
Just seems kinda petty.

I heard it had to do with the fact that LSU doesn't own the rights to the traditional logos we were using.
Therefore, they said, alright well then we'll come up with the stupidest fricking logo that no one in their right mind would copyright.
Then they laughed all the way to the bank.

I try to buy NOTHING with this logo on it. I have a winter jacket that has a small Toonces head on it, not the entire logo with claws that looks like it is driving. The ONLY reason I have it is because it was marked down from about $60 to less than $20.

How is it petty to have an opinion about the LSU Logo? Isn't this a message board that exists so that people can share their opinions?
It seems that the majority of tiger fans do not like the latest logo, and when you look at the old tiger logo, it is pretty clear that the new one was change for change sake.
I wish LSU would bring back the old logo.

Considering what this football team has done this season, not to mention the baseball team or the track and field team or the athletes that represented the school overseas in South America a month ago, it seems pretty petty.
Anyone can have their opinion. To focus on an image rather than what a particular athletic program does for LSU is pretty petty.
That's all I'm saying. I wasn't trying to rub the dude's nose in it. Easy killer.

LSU somehow put people in the upper level marketing positions who were desperate to try to make LSU look cool. It failed miserably and don't want to change it to save face. The whole, "we need to be progressive" thing is stupid and ruins LSU's big selling point - tradition and history. So what do we do? Draw cat jumping over lego LSU letters.
I have my doubts about what brand they are trying to market because it sure does attract a lot of jabroni's.
I bought a dri-fit shirt and had my aunt sew the old purple LSU and cursive letters under it onto the shirt. That's what measures I am taking to not buy toonces.

+1 ..... the helmet logo is the best but toonces is everywhere. I guess its better than the tiger with his front paws spread like he's getting butt raped. I vote helmet logo (not that my vote matters)
and there's nothing wrong with having an opinion on this JEEZ! how can you complain about a logo with our soldiers fighting for our freedom ....so petty. God, get a grip.

This makes no sense to me. What is the correlation between his (and almost everybody's) dislike of toonces and the athletes and the teams?
You do realize that toonces is on almost every LSU product that you buy, hence it is a legitimate gripe!

Not that my few dollars matter...
When you witness fubars like this, you realize that an organization as big as our fed (or even state) governments have no chance of making correct decisions collectively.
I think the logo is juvenile and I have never bought anything with it on it, and doubt I ever will.

The "new" logo (it's been around too long to be called new anymore) is not a great logo.
But neither is the old one. They both suck.
The old snarling Tiger head is very difficult to print, and it doesn't even look clear at reduced size.
Neither tiger looks all that great.
The important part of an LSU logo is the letters L-S-U themselves. It HAS to be in the logo. The reason for this is because there are many tiger mascots in the NCAA. But there's only one LSU. Texas can get away with the lone Longhorn. They're the only Longhorns in the NCAA. A lone Tiger or Tiger-related logo like the Eye will not work. It's not distinct enough to identify as LSU to the rest of the world. No matter how "cool" it is.
The other thing about the snarling head is that it can't be modified into a graphic suite. It's not versatile. Say what you want about the "new" logo... there's enough variants of it to fit pretty much anything LSU needs it for. There's the dreaded "Toonces," there's Floating Head Mike, there's the running Mike, there's the simple letters "LSU" in the Geaux Font, which matches the other logos.
Again... I don't like the "new" logo either. I think we paid an out-of-state agency too much money to make a logo that resembles their other clients' logos way too much.
But my point is that many of you complaining about the new logo honestly... don't know what the hell you're talking about. There's more to it than just how it appears to YOU.
I'm pretty much convinced that LSU will never generate a logo that satisfies everyone. No matter how great your idea is, there's always 2 people out of every 10 who will hate it. That's life in the creative industry, folks. And LSU knows that 20% will hate it. They just don't care about the 20%.
And yes, I'm aware that the # of Tiger fans who hate the new logo is probably more than 20%. But it's not hurting the bottom line. LSU sells a shitload of gear.
That's the true measure of success for a logo.

Wow! Well said! From the use of "fubars" to the critique of collective decision making, that's a great post, Grassy!

Where did you get that 20% hate the Toonces logo and 80% like it? You have it backwards.
Just out of the people I know in my family and friends, it is more like 10% that like it and 90% that can't stand it.
