Did LSU ever struggle like they are now when Skip was in charge?

IMO, no. And certainly not after he had been here several seasons.

There were bad games, series (go see what Houston did to us at home in I think '96) but not like now.

In 1988, Skip and the boys missed out on regional play but the following year was the college station miracle. LSU defeated host site A&M in improbable fashion.

1990, I believe LSU went to Omaha as Georgia won the CWS. Next year in 1991, the dynasty started. 1992, I think LSU lost in a regional at home but that was six team winner take all regionals back then.

Skip did not win every regional but I scheduled a vacation every year for May in order to attend.

Mainieri is no where near the coach or manager Skip was. This baseball program now is unpredictable and it is not consistent with talent.

Interesting info. What do you think Skip thinks about the current state of LSU baseball?

Skip was the best ever, IMO. WE are not going to get a HC of his caliber ever again.

Something is obviously wrong with LSU Baseball now, but I am really concerned whether we would hire someone better if Paul retires. (Note: CPM is not gonna be fired this year or next either.)

Mainieri deserves to be fired. Not just wins and losses. He isn’t doing his job in getting elite talent and developing the talent. His attitude is not inviting either.

I agree with all your points. The only way CPM leaves is if he wants to leave.

I honestly think they will turn things around and finish strong. Making a Regional is all but out of the question now I guess.

LSU Baseball History

Since 1985 LSU has made it to the CWS more often than they have not. Meaning in an average season, LSU is playing in Omaha at the end of the year. Mainieri is so far removed from an average season that he needs to go immediately. One in 5 years, and only 3 in the last 10. We have the recruiting classes year in and year out to be in the top half of our conference and yet we can’t even achieve that. We have a losing record over the past 4 years combined in conference play.

The most astoundingly disappointing stat I have seen concerning the lsu baseball program is that this was the worst start to an sec season that any lsu team has had since 1969 at 1-8...what the frick? That's just not acceptable here with the resources and all that skip and this program have built. That's intolerable and is bullshite to the highest degree. No excuse is good enough to justify it. We are not showing improvement either. We just have fallen that far behind.

You know full well what he means, and it's not about struggling in a game, but for entire seasons. And the answer is, from 1985 and on, no. '84 was his first year, and he took a team that had a losing record the year before and went 32-23, and 12-12 in league play. So even though that first year wasn't a great team, it was a significant accomplishment. With that said, you can't really say that he had a single year which could be described as a "struggle".

And I really don't want to hear the parity excuse today. Bertman and his players had to build the program, and do their own freakin' field maintenance. They didn't have support. Mainieri inherited a goldmine. I'm certainly not expecting to win 5 titles in 10 years again, but neither do I expect to see LSU be an afterthought.

Only reason LSU missed out in 88 was because it wasn't a 64 team tournament like it is now

It was only 48 teams

PM has missed it three times, his first year, 2011 and this year

Yeah, that team was 39-21, and 16-11. Either that 48 team field was loaded, or LSU got hosed.

The SEC also wasn't as highly thought of in baseball back then as it is now.

No. First of all the rest of the conference was not good, but the answer is no.

Completely idiotic and typical tRANT response. this is the exact same crap we said about Miles after it was obvioulsy time for him to go.
