I personally love the high-end competition openers from both a fan and football perspective. The goal is to get into the CFP and then win out to a championship. Full stop. The high-end openers can only hurt you with committee and rankings.
However, there is a football (non-fan) reason with that in mind to have them. One issue with college ball is still 'working out the kinks' 4 -6 games into the season. I'm thinking especially the OL, where I cringe (and get sorta angry) when I hear that the coaches are still trying to find their best 5 in an SEC game.
That opener forces the staff to prepare faster and harder and you go into the season not only better prepared but also with established backups (injuries are inevitable) and 'in-sync' on offense and defense (offense being much more difficult).
If you fail to prepare accordingly, it will show... as it did this year. Remember back to Dabo's comments about our failing grade, just not as bad as his team's. He was correct- both Clemson and us.
If you do prepare you have lots of momentum AND the pieces in place to build on it. As the season wears on it becomes more 'technical' where you are tweaking and adapting as opponents get more film on you (and injuries take their toll). If you have that momentum you can limit it to that 'tweaking' and not have to be doing overhauls, especially with changing personnel 'finding the best to put out there'.

For the 10,000,000th time for the idiots in the back: WE ARE NOW REQUIRED BY THE SEC TO PLAY 1 P4 OOC GAME PER YEAR. So you don’t cancel one to turn around and have to replace it, paying both a buyout and a hefty sum to lock down a new opponent.
Yep. Not only is it in place, it’s been that way since 2016

20 years ago we’d would all be on here hoping for a home game like this.

we are required to play a non-conf P4 every year

if BK were still the coach, I would agree that we should get out of this game
but Lane debuting in TS, at night, against a big opponent? That's going to be electric.
The last OOC game in tiger stadium with that type of atmosphere was who? VT?

At the end of the day football is entertainment. Personally, I'll be more entertained by LSU/Clemson than by LSU/Northern Illinois School of Dentistry

Texas missed the playoffs because they lost to Florida.
And we have to play a OOC P4 team.

Texas’ close loss to Ohio State (AT OSU) kept them out of the playoff this year. If they played UTSA week one instead they’re in the playoff
No it didn't. Their loss to a bad Florida team did them in, along with a 4Q bludgeoning by Georgia, did the trick. And near misses against UK and MSU didn't help the optics.
Losing by just one score on the road against a top 5 team in a game where you had two chances to punch it in from the 5 yard line or closer didn't hurt them nearly as much as the factors above. It blows me away so many people think it does.
