This is actually backwards. Look at Miami-ND. ND is not getting punished for losing to Miami opening weekend, but Miami is also not getting much credit for it (even in head to head comparison). So while there is little benefit, it's actually not because of the risk of losing.

we get them at home. why on earth would we let them off the hook?

don’t know that they are in the CFP.
- Vandy and BYU are on the outside looking in at least partially because their non-conference schedule was weak. If you flipped Vandy and Oklahoma’s non-conference schedules, Vandy is probably in and Oklahoma is out.
What signature win does Notre Dame have that puts them definitively over Vandy and BYU at 10-2?
Oklahoma isn't in because they beat a mid Michigan team at home: they are in because they beat Bama on the road in- conference.

I would agree with this if I didn't think we have a 75% win percentage in that match at our home grounds.

Go be a ULM fan. I pay for season tickets to watch big games

Their loss to Florida kept them out

Maybe Texas shouldn’t have lost to Florida or gone into OT with Kentucky and Mississippi State…

Oklahoma and Notre Dame are in because their names are Oklahoma and Notre Dame and not BYU and Vanderbilt.

Texas’ close loss to Ohio State (AT OSU) kept them out of the playoff this year.
getting blown the frick out by Georgia and losing to a bad Florida team that had to fire their coach is what kept them out.
Not a close loss to the #1 team in the country.
needing OT to beat Kentucky and Mississippi State didn't do them any favors either.

I would never support such a stupid idea.
Regardless, beginning in 2026 it's an SEC scheduling requirement that at least 1 of the 3 non-conference games be against a Power 4 opponent.

LSU could win and Clemson goes on the win the rest of their games.... or just end up being meh.
Either way, get a win over a team that you don't have to Google to learn about.

With this mentality won’t you suggest LSU leave the SEC so they won’t have to play nine SEC games. As sn independent they can play twelve cupcakes and go 12-0. No playoffs, either.

Screw that.
LSU has been repeatedly screwed by not getting a return game over the years.
Arizona State fiasco in '05. Of course that was out of LSU's control with Hurricane Katrina.
Texas in '20 due to the bullshite COVID virus stupidity.
What better way to kick off the Lane Kiffin era with Clemson in the 'Real Death Valley' for '26?

The playoffs will be expanded because of this. They will go to16 teams pretty soon the SEC will force it.The conference is to strong top to bottom and a 3 loss SEC team is better than some of the teams who are going to be in the playoffs this season.

Tough schedule next year but I think that is good because the team will need to be fired up every game.

If they beat a cupcake instead of OSU, and were 10-2, they’d be in the playoffs but eliminated early.
But they would still be in the CFP...which means the odds of winning a NC, even if low, are still better than the odds if they were not in the CFP...which is ZERO.

I guess that makes a difference to you; it doesn’t to me.
So you would prefer your team to NOT make the CFP and, thus, not have any chance to win the NC, vs. having them reach the CFP and, at least, have some degree of a shot to win? I suspect you would be in the very small minority of people who feel that way.
As a fan, I want to see LSU plays teams like Clemson (or Texas play OSU) because those games are FAR more entertaining than watching games vs. totally overmatched opponents. At the end of the day, college football is not my job. It's just an entertainment option...and I'd prefer to be entertained. However, I understand it from a competitive perspective. If the downside of losing a big game FAR outweighs the benefit of winning one, then it's arguably not worth playing.
Brian Kelly never had a losing season at LSU. Yet, he got fired for no reaching the CFP. If we had the 12 team system we have now in 2022 and 2023, then LSU beating FAU vs. losing to FSU would have put a 10-2 LSU team in the CFP both seasons and Kelly would still have a job. When there is that much emphasis on reaching the CFP, then it only benefits a coach to take steps to give him the best chance to get there.

You must never actually go to home LSU games. I promise you no season ticket holder wants to pay good money to watch LSU play cupcakes. We are finally getting a good OOC game at home. UCLA doesn’t count. It was as hot as the sun that day.
