I felt the entire night we never were threatened and just coasted. I felt the entire night we held back. Generic play calling on O as well as D. Never rushed more than the D-line most of the night. Against AU on 3rd downs we brought the house damn near everytime. I feel the coaches never felt threatened.

Yep.
Holding back? Are you kidding? It's the 4th game of the year. The coaches go into a week and gameplan a set of formations and plays from those formations that they think will work against a particular defensive look. There's no way Crowton or Miles said, "This single back trips-right screen to LaFell will work against State because of the way their corners play against that formation. But let's leave it out so we can use it later in the year."

Does anyone think LSU was holding back last night and not wanting to open playbook too soon? What say you?
We are holding back on defense. Right now we are leaving a hole in our scheme for RB's receiving out of the backfield. Boy will Florida be surprised when they see that we were holding that part of the scheme back and their RB's are blanketed.

I agree with this!! It was a subpar effort.

Completely different. Florida spreads the field, so we will have our nickel and dime packages in the game most of the time anyway. Our defensive scheme against State doesn't really apply to Florida, especially since the Gators don't have much of a running back, and of course we'll have someone on Harvin wherever he is on the field.

why does the team having a sub par performance, and certain schemes not being used have to be mutually exclusive? they aren't, as both were the case last night.

How do you know what schemes were, and weren't used?

I don't know how anyone can say we held anything back on offense. We threw the ball down the field much more than we did in the first two and a half games. The only thing I didn't see in this game was screen passes, but those are on film already from the other games..... The coaches ran the plays they thought would work against State's defense. Plain and simple.

Now, on defense, I would hope we help back some of our blitz packages, as we didn't get much pressure on Lee (as evidenced by several other threads).

ETA: I should clarify and say that I didn't see any wide receiver screens. There were a couple to Keiland.

how many times did we bring last level pressure with 1 or 2 extra men up the middle at the QB? How many times did we care to adjust by adding an extra Db to cover the RB out the backfield even the whole stadium knew it was coming?

we played a fairly vanilla scheme on defense. Just like we did against for large stretches of some of our earlier games. It doesn't mean our players are holding back, they aren't. We only have X number of wrinkles we can add, and virtually every team in the country tries to save some wrinkles (esp on defense) for bigger games.

and i also tailgate and routinely sit with my cousin, who worked for the team for 4 years....specifically the defense.

I think the coaches know what they are doing. At times they try new things and see how different players do in certain situations.

I think that has been conscious by the coaching staff, even against Auburn. We played a lot of base defense last night.

Offensively, we are throwing it downfield with a freshman, but I think those throws are less risky than the sideline routes that Lee has already had one pick six, and almost had one last night. However, when you can throw as well as we have been throwing, against SEC defenses, the occasional interception is the price of doing business. What I liked is that in both the pick six against Auburn and the pick last night, the read was correct, the pass was just a little off.

Defensively, we are not blitzing alot, and the tackling is improving. Overall, I think that the team is oriented towards defending against the spread, but they made good adjustments last night. The last scoring drive by Miss. State was against primarily backups/younger players on the DL and the secondary.

we had Trindon at receiver last night on a few plays so I highly doubt we were holding back. After the two TO's we got a little conservative but not too much.

Nope.

80% of the playbook really does have CS running up the middle.

I mean come on, Miss St is still an SEC team. They are going to score and move the ball every once in awhile.

Then pray tell what happened against a weak Ga.Tech last week? Last I checked Ga Tech was in the putrid ACC and they made MSU look like an high school team. I realize that they were really fired up to beat us but really, how could they make that much improvement in one week? Our defense has better get its act together and hopefully not start the kind of late season swoon that it had last year where the offense had the bail it out game after game except for UK and Arky where the offense fell just short, no thanks to that so-called vaunted defense!
