I never heard anyone from Louisiana call LSU anything but LSU.
That’s not in question. OP asked when did we stop being called Louisiana St. in the press. From my recollection, it was around the late 70s to early 80s.

I have never heard anyone refer to Arizona State as ASU.

I went to my first LSU game in 1958, when I was 4 years old. It was LSU then, and LSU since. And the official name was Fightin'Tigers, not Fighting Tigers. Bayou Bengals has also been used for a very long time, at least since the 60's.

it reminds me that I’ve noticed plenty of older clips, polls, announcers (most recently Verne) etc would always refer to us as the now almost defunct, “Louisiana St.” as opposed to “LSU.” When did the “LSU” abbreviation become more commonplace and generally accepted than “Louisiana St?”
Yes he did lol

Again, in Louisiana, we were always LSU; in the national press we were Louisiana St. until LSU made an effort to brand itself nationally as LSU.

Ladies basketball team used to be called the Bengals. Ever heard of the Bengal Belles?

I agree the national media has often referred to LSU as Louisiana State. However, LSU has also been used by the national media dating back decades.

Watch the video of Notre Dame vs LSU in 1971 and see what they call the Tigers. Anyone who thinks LSU was anything but LSU since AT LEAST the 1940's is someone who knows absolutely nothing about LSU.

Football got away from the big endzones and went to the Geaux font.
The big end zones says LSU
I find Baseball ranking seem to be the one of the few places we’re called LOuisiana State
It could be because there are so many teams in baseball there are other LSUs like Liberty State or some shite like that.

Grew up in the 70’s and it was always LSU ..so I’m guessing the Louisiana St stuff is the same as “Southern Cal” for USC or “Texas Christian” for TCU or “Brigham Young” for BYU...it’s used by a few journalists ..but it’s not the norm.

We still get referred to as Louisiana State in the baseball circle, which I kind of like, tbh. I think it's pretty classy and when I hear Louisiana State, I immediately think of LSU baseball.
