There was an agreed upon number with the Indians that was changed either by him or his agent between day 1 and 2 of the draft. If his agent changed it without his go ahead, he needs to fire his agent. If he changed the number or authorized his agent to do so, he needs to be unhappy with himself.

Moscona said Cleveland drafted him without agreeing to a number. He could be full of shite, or it could simply be what Schmidt's family told him...but interesting nonetheless.

And sources on the Cleveland side have said there was an agreed upon number on the day he was drafted, and then number went up significantly the next day.

It was mentioned on the Locked On Guardians Podcast maybe on Tuesday morning. The host of that has tweeted about the situation a bunch and may have mentioned it there too.
ETA: And given Moscona's baseball track record, I'm going to go with the guys with front office sources in Cleveland over GameCoin Scam Boy.

Well the young man has 3-4 options and he has to choose something.
1. Sign with Cleveland, take $$$ offered
2A. Sign with LSU, enter draft again in 29, NIL Cash
2B. Sign with another college team, enter draft again in 29, NIL Cash
3 Go JUCO, enter draft again next season, No NIL Cash
4 Remain amateur, enter draft again next season, No NIL Cash
I think he has a bigger problem going to Cleveland than anything. I suppose he could ask for a trade but I doubt it to happen.

You have a weird attitude about this...the kid has known for a while now he was going to get drafted high enough to get a big bag and go pro.
And suddenly, regardless of why, that's not happening. It's unreasonable for him to be excited about plan B or C or D all of a sudden.

Again, kids who have zero interest in school and turn down over a million don’t do well in 3 year programs. They’re unhappy and jaded and bitter. You are admitting as much in your post. I’m not expecting him to be happy about coming to LSU. I’m saying it’s best for all involved if he moves on as quickly as possible. That’s juco. He can always transfer to D1 later.

Haven’t listened to Moscona in years, could care less what he reported. Was curious if there were indeed media reports saying he changed his number. Reading the GM remarks made it seem they went in thinking it was a gamble, which makes me think they didn’t have a number in place before hand. That’s why I asked for a link. Maybe that podcast knows the truth, maybe they are no better than Moscona?

It's when they (or people that work for them who want to vent) can go off record and leak things, is where you get more of true version from their vantage point.
The podcast guy reported on twitter that they called the agent with a number around 2.6 I think and was told it would be enough. The next day, the number changed, Cleveland pivoted right away knowing they'd still get that pick back and could spend the rest of their draft money without accounting for the overage for Schmidt.
There wasn't a true agreement but there was a number given and okay'd, according to the Cleveland side.
I'm also looking at it from the standpoint of this is the kid's 3rd agent in like 4 months and Cleveland hasn't failed to sign a top ten round pick since Ross Kivett was picked in the 10th in 2013. I'm going to lean more toward the org knowing what they're doing than a 17 year old with a new agent.

At least by when school starts in August so he can participate in fall practice if he wants any chance of seeing the field

You need to understand the out of the box thinking. He has no rights to trade but if Cleveland lets him rot on the vine they come out with nothing. If he signs any options he has are out the door.

The fact this kid has yet to decide starts to make me think the concerns about maturity / bad advice might have some merit to them.
Maybe it’s time to move on.

Gerrit Cole and Tyler Beede were both drafted in 1st round and played for Ucla and Vandy. Both drafted again in 1st round.
