Because they really and absolutely controlled the line and got a push up the middle. Will that continue? Who knows. But they did look very good against an admittedly weak Clemson. Inexperience and unproven has no bearing on how they looked in their one game so far. They played like they were experienced.

People have talked about the physicality and speed of the defense but not many people are talking about the intelligence and unselfishness of it.
The play that impressed me the most was Jordan Ross's sack in the 3rd quarter. Dashawn Spears played a pivotal role in creating that sack that doesn't show up on the stat sheet, and defenses in past years would have blown. Spears and Ross both got to the backfield and had a play at the QB, and Clemson's RB released underneath for a dumpoff route. Defenses past would have both players aiming for the QB and the QB can just dump off over them to the RB who could probably go for a big gain. Instead, Spears doesn't pursue the QB and gets in the passing lane to the RB, taking away the QB's safety valve and lets Ross go try to make the sack. You know every defensive player wants to get that sack to their name, it spoke volumes to me to see a defensive player be unselfish enough to have a clear shot to the QB, but back off to stick to his assignment and let his teammate go after the QB instead
And then Ross got his hands up and didn't let the QB get away, kept him in front the whole time until he could actually get his arms around him. I feel like too many times I've seen our pass rushers run full speed at the QB and dive and miss the tackle and take himself out of the play, giving the QB so much more time to find someone downfield or scramble for a chunk gain.

Princewill (over 650 career snaps)
Blocton (over 600 career snaps)
Green (over 600 career snaps)
Dom (over 500 snaps)
Ross (around 300 snaps)
Noe of these guys would considered to be inexperienced in modern college football. You could argue some are unproven for sure though.
And when you mix in stud 5 stars and future NFL guys like Geralds you have the recipe for a good to great DL. A guy like Dylan Carpenter has developed into a SEC level edge. You look up you got 11ish guys playing on that DL. Talent and depth are there.

Their OL is terrible and so they became one dimensional with an inexperienced QB. On paper the defense should be good anyway but I'll wait until we play a team with a pulse in the running game before crowning them.

This is the biggest difference. We don’t have one of these. Depth is also a concern. Not at remaining good or even really good, but being great, which I think this defense is/can be 100% healthy. But we’ve got a handful of guys with a pretty big gap between them and their backups. Not that the backups aren’t good, but we’ve got 4 or 5 defensive guys that are elite.

This defense is better all around than last year, and especially at DE. Containment last year was mainly due to the fact that our DE's crashed inside every dang play and the outside was just wide open for QB to tuck and go. We actually have DE coaches this year and better talent being coached almost across the board. This is going to be a dominant defense all year.

I, like everyone else here, am very excited about the potential of this D. But I’m holding my breath until after Ole Miss & aTm.
If we look like a dominant unit after those two offenses, then the sky is the limit for 2026.
