Not too many teams opened 4 straight years with a legit power 5 opponent. Make it five now.

I really can’t think of a mainstay power 5 team as good as LSU has been the last 20 years lose 4 straight season openers.

The vast majority of programs like LSU schedule cupcake games for openers.

I just looked at the last 3 years to see how many P5 teams played P5 opening games every year. I could only find 8 teams:

Penn State (3-0)
vs. West Virginia (W)
@ Purdue (W)
@ 12 Wisconsin (W)

West Virginia (0-3)
@ 7 Penn State (L)
@ 17 Pitt (L)
@ Maryland (L)

Clemson (1-2)
@ Duke (L)
vs. Georgia Tech (W)*

vs. 5 Georgia (L)*

Ohio State (3-0)
@ Minnesota (W)
vs. 5 Notre Dame (W)
@ Indiana (W)

LSU (0-3)
vs. 8 Florida State (L)*
vs. Florida State (L)*
@ UCLA (L)

Northwestern (1-2)
@ Rutgers (L)
vs. Nebraska (W)*
vs. Michigan State (L)

Nebraska (0-3)
@ Minnesota (L)
vs. Northwestern (L)*
@ Illinois (L)

Indiana (1-2)
vs. 3 Ohio State (L)
vs. Illinois (W)
@ 18 Iowa (L)

*Neutral site game
Italics = conference game
(I included Notre Dame in the “P5” for the sake of discussion.)

5 of the 8 teams are in the Big 10. Big 10 conference play starts week 1. (ETA: I was mistaken about their OOC schedule requirements - looks like it’s really just because they have conference games in week 1.)

As far as I can tell, LSU is the only program in the country to schedule a P5 non-conference opener in each of the past 3 years. This year will make it 4 years in a row.

Nobody else is really scheduling their biggest OOC game in week 1 every year like we do. It doesn’t excuse the performance, but I think it does explain why you don’t see the same thing from other programs.

Exact same here. Although, not going only because schedule doesn't allow this year.

. You just completely made this up. I think he lost 2 openers his entire time there
Norvell took ND to overtime the year before Kelly came to LSU. Lost to a dreadful Texas team in 2016. Of course he’s not going to lose Ball State and the like.

So your evidence for this claim…

but he does seems to struggle in season opening games. At Notre Dame, he did as well.

… is that in his 12 years he had a loss to Texas and a close win against FSU?

I just checked and he was actually 10-2 in opening games at ND. The 2016 Texas loss was ND’s worst season during his tenure. They went 4-8. The other loss was 2011, his second season, against USF. ND went 8-5 that year.

Meanwhile his best win in an opener was in 2018 against a Michigan team that finished 10-3 (8-1) and #14.

I don’t think his record really supports your conclusion that he struggled in openers at ND.

Second, the Big 10 requires its members to play at least 2 P5 OOC games.

That’s not true. Michigan played 0 P5 opponents OOC last year and Purdue was the only one to play 2.

You’re correct. I misremembered. They used to have a requirement to play one OOC P5 opponent and I thought that they changed it to 2, but it appears they actually removed the requirement (possibly around the same time they went to a 9 game conference schedule).

So yeah I guess the real reason is simply that they have conference games in week 1.

Need to have Drew Brees have the team practice playing a full simulation game the week before the opener.

I’m just saying that I don’t have a whole lot of confidence in Brian Kelly when it comes to season openers. He always overcomes it, and the team improves as the season goes, but we need to win one of these eventually.

And I get it, we’re playing teams, but at what point do we become the good team?

As much as we all complained about those years and the underachieving, at least we regularly got into October/November as contenders with some hope.

The sad reality is that this scheduling has no real upside anymore - go 10-2 in the SEC with any OOC schedule and you are 90% in the playoffs.

I wouldnt expect them to break the trend
If they lose to condoms, 8 - 4 at best.
In the long run, it doesnt matter.

bingeaux...it is way past time that we play a breather before our first tough game. The fla state debacles were mainly from players not knowing what to do it certain situations, especially special teams/fg / extra point attempts.
that stuff should be identified and corrected before a competitive game in the future.

Unfortunately will prob have to wait til 2028 for that. Unless you don’t count playing UH in NRG tough.

2025 @ Clemson 8/30
2026 vs Clemson 9/5
2027 @ Houston 9/4

It really is a disgraceful streak. We used to pride ourselves on always winning these games

USC is going to score on us. Too many holes on defense. We should be able to score more and pull out a victory.

Screwed us out of the national title. We helped Bama there.
