I think this is a rare situation where both should play and give opponents more to prepare for and defend.
If I had to pick, Max is the guy and use his legs knowing the backup option is nearly as good.

That's the key, Brennan was off to an amazing start last year. Will continue. TJ will transfer, Nuss will wait.

I have one doubt about Brennan, and I have none about Johnson. My doubt concerns Brennan’a poise in the pocket. The one way he’ll keep Max on the bench is to be surgical back there. The spring game won’t expose that because there is no hitting. If I had to bet everything I had on LSU I would prefer Johnson at QB. If I had to bet everything on who will be the day 1 starter I might put it on Brennan.
Johnson sure looks good back there. He flows well in the pocket, looks good on the hoof, and seems to find the right receivers.

I just can't see them benching their senior QB who has done everything they have asked and done it the right way but I can see the shortest leash in the country for this season.
There's no reason to pull a switch after potentially two losses to move to Max later when already knowing who has the greatest potential to lead you back to the playoffs and has more time to do so. Max has won games in spite of the defense. Brennan hasn't been able to overcome bad defensive play on the field. That's where the toughest games will be won (Brennan has no 4th quarter comeback wins). Against Mizzou (the second loss) was Brennan's shot with two plays from inside the 5 with terrible throws when the plays had to be made. Max just got it done (not simply because of his arm but with his poise, handling that pressure).
Let's be clear, Brennan had a better arm than Burrow. Burrow had better poise, presence, and moxie. The same attributes apply to Max. Rewarding QBs for hanging around usually doesn't work out. If two QBs are considered even, you go with younger guy especially if he feels like he was the better of the two because if he transfers, it's a program killer. Brennan leaving doesn't hurt the future of the program with Max still available.

Johnson looks much more comfortable in the pocket and is elite at avoiding sacks and running when necessary. That will be the determining factor IMHO along w 3rd down conversions and moving the chains. We'll see......

Based on the highlights Brennan and Johnson are the two dogs in the hunt. Finley and Nuss had 5 picks between them.
Best throw of the day - Brennan to Boutte down the sideline.
One thing I noticed was that Brennan is really good when he gets rid of the ball early and on time. Once he has to recalculate his QBR likely goes way down. Johnson on the other hand can extend the play better than MB. This could be a big difference in keeping drives alive.

Max overall looks like the better QB and should be the starter. I feel bad for Brennan after he has dutifully waited his turn, but he just seems to be missing the “it” factor.

I don't understand people using meaningless stats to justify putting Brennan back in. Wins and losses is the only thing that matters and Brennan couldn't get the W when he had the chance. It doesn't matter what you do the rest of the game if you can't close at the end. Max kept it together and led the team at the end of the game.

Nobody talks about which one has the team’s attention from a leadership standpoint.

Brennan...he has paid his dues, he passed for 1100 yards in 3 games last yr, he has been here 4yrs for 1 chance...he is good enough
This is such a stupid argument. Do you want to compete for a national championship? Do you think Bama plays based on how long a player has been there?
He’s waited that long because he wasn’t good enough to play. Simple as that
I don’t care who starts, because I know that whoever starts will be the better player. frick how long they’ve been here

quote:The TD? I hope that wasn't the best throw, because it wasn't very good. Floated out there, and the defender just misplayed it badly. Looked like he played the WR and tried to cover a corner, instead of finding the ball.

Did Brennan have some Mett-like lasers? That's the one thing he can bring, that Max seemingly can't... the classic frozen rope that just pops the hands of the WR, about 20 yds downfield.
