Sitting back and watching some old LSU games under Les Helm, I loved the dude but damn was his clock management piss poor.

Do you remember how many times we’d have a delay of game penalty on offense coming out of a timeout? The rythm and pace of his offense led to mediocrity.

No one will ever convince me that he had the slightest idea of what he was doing when Flynn and Byrd bailed him out at the end of Auburn 07.

That FG wasn’t a guarantee and there was going to be time to attempt it if the pass didn’t work.

Sounds like an easy explanation until you consider we had a timeout. I remain unconvinced.

OC calls a pass play, sends it to the field, HC says, "no, don't like it, send another!" OC sends another pass play to the field, HC says, "no, don't like that either!" OC sends a off tackle run to the field, HC says, "no, don't like it!"
Offense gets a 5 yard penalty. OC sends down a I formation strong right 32 blast. HC says, "oh yea, I like that one, run right up the middle!"

If you use the timeout, the D knows you’re gonna take a shot.

Look I’m a Les Lover but I have no defense for OM 09, Tenn 10, or even the last 3 plays with the lead in Bama 12. But AU 07 was beautiful.

That's justification for bleeding almost a full 32-35 seconds off the clock?

That call at the end of the Auburn game is the best percentage call given the personnel. But most coaches don’t have the nuts to call it. Had he run the ball the likely outcome is no gain. That leaves you with a 36 yard FG (I think). The odds on that are 90% maybe? With Flynn at QB throwing immediately on his drop there is maybe a 1% chance at a sack. Even if that happens you have a 60% chance of winning with a 43 yard FG. An interception is the only outcome that totally screws you. What are the chances of that with Flynn to Byrd and the piss-poor Auburn DB? 5%? About the same as the chances of a fumble on a running play, so we can neglect that in the ensuing math. The chances of a TD are about 50%?

If the percentages above are correct. Les improves his chances from 90% to 95% by throwing the ball. There was 0.00000% chance of the clock running out.

so I assume you won’t allow us to talk about past wins either since they’re, you know, in the past.
