If Les Miles wins the BCSNC title this year, would his tenure be considered superior to Pete Carroll's and Urban Meyer's run at USC and Florida respectively?

What if he manages to win another NC, including this year, in the next couple of years giving him 3? What will his legacy be then?

i dunno about carroll's run. that 03-05 stretch included 1 loss before the 2005 title game

and they were in the discussion for the title game in 2006 and 2007 until the very end

if miles wins it all this year, his run will be superior to meyer's imho

if 2012 LSU is better than 2011 (which it very well may be), we could run at carroll's USC run

The USC run was enhanced by the 3 Heismans within a short span of 4 years.
The incredible number of 5 stars who went there, Hollywood lifestyle, parties - all adding to the perception that it was quasi-NCAA royalty.
The utter dominance of their PAC10 conference.
The total dominance in their bowl games.

It is difficult to do all this without media supporting you and giving you any and all kinds of positive support and bias.

I doubt that LSU/Les or anyone will have that kind of adulation even when we win 2 more NCs in the next 2 years.

I don't care what he does Les will not get the national respect that he deserves. As long as he is,"The Mad Hatter" then he will always be thought of as a joke.

USC benefited by playing in the weak PAC 10 those years with Carrol...always healthy for the bowl games...

I think it all depends on next season. Les has the future of this program in great shape- I expect greatness again next year. If we repeat, then Les will be the most successful head coach in the modern era.

The 2011 LSU fighting tiger football team is at the door step of two more game to all time glory. And in reality a real chance to go down in college football lore as the very best college football team that ever was.
The strength of schedule and depth of talented football players. On this years LSU football team is not so quietly making the college football fans recognise that the 2011 LSU football team is on the very threshold of winning and playing them self into college football historical greatness. Two more opponents to defeat. Georgia bulldogs in the Georgie Dome for the SEC Championship in Atlanta. And then, the New Orleans Super Dome against the once beating Alabama Crimson tide. In New Orleans BCS Championship game. Two Games to all time Glory.

PC sure had his brain freezes but c'mon let us not act like USC was just a good team. They were excellent with great players and dominated almost every game for a stretch of 3 years or so.

They had 3 heismans (even if it were only a popularity contest) - that is it saying something about the quality of the team.

The lack of other great teams could have made their path easier - but on the other hand , just like the LSU team this year or any other SEC team in the years past, who is not to say that they wouldn't have tempered themselves when playing in a harder conference.

I think Les has already cemented his legacy. Other than 2008, which was a rebuilding year, the team has been near the top of the SEC ever since Miles took over for Saban.

Obviously, if he and his team can finish the year 14-0 with the crystal football, he'll reach legendary status whenever he decides to retire.

But let's not forget that Miles earned the title of "The Mad Hatter" with some of the most gutsiest/sometimes bizarre playcalls in recent memory. His clock mismanagement hurt the national perception of him but I don't think anyone is denying that Les Miles is a fantastic football coach anymore.

Miles is a legend already.

USC's legacy is tainted because of NCAA sanctions.

Finally someone pointing out USC sanctions are mentioned. That to me disqualifies them from consideration. Serious infractions not minor.

And the kids might be named after Lester Earl that other Tigerdroppings legend.

The question was about National Perception , not local not facts.

Whether you like it or not, USC will be remembered as THE dominant team in this decade. They will remember Petey and his team partying and thrashing teams from all conferences.

Sure folks will remember some issue about a player getting benefits, some infractions but meh.. no one cares.

Cam was last year and nothing happened with 180000 and it is forgotten soon - all that they will remember is a glorious run in 2010 by Auburn.

Perception is often based on first impressions and we are very reluctant to change it even when facts are presented to us in an obvious fashion.

Les was thought of as a bumbler and even the LSU fan base refers to him as "our idiot" and doesn't bother refuting that NO he is NOT an idiot - all because of perception. The man is a veritable force in his coaching profession , yet because of either media or fans or opponents, there is a certain stigma attached to him that will never go away and every praise will have a "but" and a backhanded compliment in it.

You do realize nopeat had an illegitmate run at best? In retrospect they have nothing to show for '04 and '05. Miles already has more BCS championships than USC retained from nopeats reign. One more for Les, be it this season or next will eclipse what CUM did at UF IMO.

It's not even close on who I'd rather have in charge of my team.....if I were an AD

USC had a great run but it's got an * by it for cheating........

Miles will be the coach ALL past & future coaches will be judged by at LSU
