I agree, and I would even throw Beckwith in that mix, but which one of these guys in a tough season stepped up into a leadership role (maybe I should have clarified, but I consider leadership as part of a players overall character). I'm not saying all of Miles' players are thugs, but either for lack of development or lack of ability none of these players stepped up when there was an opportunity to take a leadership position this year.
No, you are retroactively trying to account for the losses based on this "character" issue.
The truth is staring you in the face but you refuse to acknowledge it. With the exception of Perriloux, character is a non-factor. And, it's not Perriloux's character that hurt us, it was the fact that he's not on the team. The bigger issue was the DC hire. That had everything to do with our record.
But, go ahead and keep believing that Miles is just recruiting a lower character guy.

I'm sure that not many of them would say Miles is a "great" coach. I'm sure not many of them would agree with your original assertion (!) that he's "average at best" either.
Okay, replace "great" with "good" I still think you'd get very few if any people that would support that. He's so far in over his head, and it's painfully obvious to anyone and everyone not wearing purple and gold. He's a good, and maybe even great recruiter, a stand up character guy, and very likable. But when it comes to managing a football game and running a game plan, he's one of the worst in the conference. I just can't for the life of me see why people support him so staunchly...
He's done a good job of steering the ship for the past couple of years. But this year when we didn't have solid QB, and had some questions on defense is the year when a really sound football mind could have made a huge difference.

No I think Miles recruits talent and just really doesn't weigh character as much as the previous staff did. Yes, Friday's loss can be chalked up to a lack of discipline on two plays. Granted there were other problems, but even with those problems this team should have won.

Sure Saban recruited guys that had problems, but they didn't stay long.
How did this myth get perpetuated? Didn't Saban let the DE play who kicked his girlfriend's arse in his car?

look at his decision to get rid of Damien James in 2002.
I thought James went AWOL after failing a drug test. I'm not sure ol' Nick had to make this hard moral choice that you're suggesting.
And I'm pretty sure Saban recruited Perilloux, even though he signed after Saban left.

Great post!

1st off saban had 4 losses and only had 1 really good season. I seem to remember something about saban having alot of player problems at bama and keeping one of his best players on the team after a couple of arrests. He had the same problem at LSu although I do not recall names at the moment. How can you say that JL is not a leader after all his mistakes he would still do interviews put the blame on himself and get back up and try again.

Meyer ….11-1 ( 2 games still to be played ) & ???
Miles……7-5 ( 1 game still to be played ) & ???
How can you possibly compare these two coaches? Maybe Ryan perrilloux doesnt win us 11 games this season, but you cannot compare a team with tim tebow to a team that has to replace an experienced starter with a RS freshman and a true freshman. Give Miles a break!!!

I'm unsure as to why Miles should get a pass for having all of his eggs in RP's basket.

Let me preface this by saying that I despise Meyer. He looks like a vampire. Anyway, at Utah and Florida I've never seen him lose a team like Miles lost this team. Also, if you watch both of them during the game, one of them seems to have a handle of what is transpiring on the field, as well as how to best use timeouts. I'll let you take a guess which one that is...

It's not a "pass", its just the way things went down. The previous year MF got the majority of snaps as the starter. RP got a alot of quality snaps and a couple of starts as the backup and Hatch even got a few snaps in as the third string. How is that having all your eggs in RP's basket for the next year? That's about what most teams do and even more than some in preparation for the following season.

I can't stand it when people use this argument over and over and over again. Yes, Saban did recruit them which by some backwards logic makes them "his" players. Saban hasn't been around teaching these guys in the 3 or 4 years they played for LSU. So yes, they may be Saban's recruits, but they are Miles' players. arse
THANK YOU!!

Why don't you measure the 5th season also which is a better and complete evaluation?
Posted on 12/3/08 at 3:02 pm to Skillet
Yeah, because those jrs he had last season on the NC team don't mean squat.
Think of it this way. Even if the recruits last season were Saban's Miles had been the one coaching and developing them for three years. Giving Saban credit for the talent and skill those players had seems pretty damn stupid. It is important to get talent in, but more important to develop it.

Like I said earlier, it's like Saban is the "birth parent" who abandoned the kids while they were young. Miles "raised" them and as such, should get the credit for their accomplishments.

AGREED. But, if he gets the credit for their accomplishments, he should also get the blame for what happened this season, the lack of development, and the regression of the team until the bitter end.

You don't think Miles has taken heat this season? It's been unmerciful. As a matter of fact, he's gotten piled on evey year. In my opinion, the opposite has been the problem. He takes heat every time a player sneezes wrong. But when we experience any measure of success, it's always with "Saban's players".
