Who was the last P5 team with a top 10 defense to lose at least 5 games? I’d be willing to bet it hasn’t happened in quite a while. I’ve seen some here project a top 5 defense and still expect multiple losses. If this defense is 2011 good, it will carry us to 11 wins.

You do understand that if the offense constantly goes 3-and-out that the defensive stats will suffer? There is no guarantee that the best defense in the country will finish top 10 in stats.

I agree that we can be top 10 but I don’t think this defense will be 2011 good. I don’t see us creating enough turnovers and our Dline isn’t as good as that years. Our front was beastly that year!

They will be good...but not 2011 good.

Exactly. We may have top 10 talent but if the offense struggles I doubt we put up top 10 numbers.

The main thing is can they force turnovers and create short fields for the offense

Michigan and UTSA were both top 10 in total defense last year and wound up with 5 losses. State was top 10 and had 4 losses.

Our defense isn't going to be as good as it was in 2011.

It's not a knock. That was one of the best in CFB history. We honestly may never have a defense that good again.

Someone above me said LSU 2014. I think that's fair. This year will be a lot similar to that year, only no Fournette.

What a moron

LSU was 9th in yards per game and 6th in points per game defensively in 2014 and finished 8-5

I had to go back a whole 4 years to find our own team to accomplish this feat

Didn’t Boston College have the number 1 defense in the entire FBS one year and go winless in the ACC?

Ditto, watched the rerun of the LSU/Bama 2011 9-6 defensive battle, and was so remembering how good our defense was that year. Too bad we were forced to play the "GUMPS" again and basically handed them the championship because unfortunately Les refused to let JL "try" to pass the ball for us vs his loyalty to JJ.

I pray we beat them this year, not holding my breath, but we have to believe we can!

You do understand this has been the case for awhile? How many times have we have not had a top D and only 7 wins?

Yep the offense has to be able sustain drives in order for the defense to rest. If our offense cant do that then our D will be gassed by the 3rd quarter in the first few weeks. It takes a while for the players to get in game shape no matter how much conditioning they do in the offseason.

This defense is going to create turnovers, a lot of turnovers. I would be willing to bet that our offense may not be spectacular but our defense will force so many 3 and outs that we will tire out opposing defenses

In 2015 Missouri was #6 in total defense, yet finished the year 5-7 (1-7). That same year Boston College was #1 in total defense, but finished the season 3-9 (0-8)

Not correct Michigan only loss 4 regular season games. The OP is talking about the win total for the regular season
