I think he's trying to temper expectations since Ole Miss is returning some talent, mainly Chambliss. He has never coached at LSU but he knows how intense the Ole Miss atmosphere will be that night, so he doesn't know what to expect yet from his team.

I don't fault him for saying that. It's sort of how I feel too, to be honest.

Regardless of what happens in that game, LSU is setup much better for long term success. The outcome of Lane's first SEC game early in the season doesn't mean much other than bragging rights. LSU could lose that game and still gel later in the year and win the championship.

LSU is playing with house money that game. Nothing about that game impacts LSU's next 5 years other than how quickly Ole Miss withers and dies as a program.

Kiff is just down playing it. LSU is going to beat that arse so bad that the NCAA will immediately issue a run rule for football.

He’s a Puss. He can’t just stand on his word about anything. I love that he’s the HC of LSU…but as a Man, he a puss about a lot of things

He knows that just because a school is set up better to win, it doesn’t mean it will actually happen. He’s lost his fair share of games that he should’ve won in the past and he’ll likely do it again at some point at LSU.

it's worth repeating for DIAB2013:

LSU is going to beat that arse so bad that the NCAA will immediately issue a run rule for football.

I don't quite understand why some LSU fans are intent on trying to drag down Lane before he's even coached a game here.
