Lane cleverly indicated he hopes (expects?) Trinidad will transfer.

MVB sucks, it’s a hard pass for me. Lane can get someone way better!!

quote:Can he be better? Of course. Can he be good enough to lead a championship level offense....not based on quite a bit of SEC play under a couple different coaches and teams. Van Buren is a capable short term back up in the SEC. He may have a fair career in the SunBelt?
I know everyone wants a new QB with all the new going on in the football program but Lane can do things with Van Buren. Keep an open mind.

If Chamblis is granted an additional year of eligibility and comes to LSU then I don't want Van Buren. Even then LSU still looks to portal for a younger QB who can somewhat compete with Chamblis for QB1 but also have 1-2 years remaining to be starter after Chamblis. Can't focus on 3 QBs at once.
If Chamblis cannot/does not come to LSU then keep MVB to compete for QB1 while likely being a solid QB2, but in this case hit the portal hard for day 1 starter.

I’d take a coached up Van Buren as a backup in a heartbeat.

MVB will be distant memory. Be thankful.

I wouldn’t pay a bunch of money to keep Van Buren. We can bring in any number of raw recruits and expect them to do well.
But assuming we get a portal QB1, I have no issue with VB staying as a backup. Seems pretty win-win: we get a backup who will presumably be serviceable after an offseason with Lane, and he gets to get coached up by Lane.
Could easily see him redshirting in 2026 (unless injury luck forces the issue) while a portal QB1 shines and then being ready to start in 2027. And if he’s just a career backup, oh well, having that depth is really helpful.
VB had a really rough year, but I don’t think the book is written on him yet.
All that said, if he’s commanding like $2M a year on the market, thank him for his time and move on. He shouldn’t, but who knows
