Sounds like coonass for "The smart move is a 5 year contract with massive incentives." Which makes perfect sense.

This is the only statement that makes any sense whatsoever.

You think coaches only work 60 hours a week?

This is the perfect encapsulation of why I left Louisiana.

This guy is a total charlatan whoring out the state’s greatest asset for some publicity. And he got elected by a majority of voters and may well get reelected.

shite’s fricked top to bottom.

I propose a statue of Jeff Landry in front of Tiger Stadium.

all it takes is one program with the balls to do it, similar to when every program was too big of a pussy to be be the first school to allow alcohol sales in the stadium

So why would any coach with an acceptable amount of experience or success for a program like LSU take a "prove it" contract when they already have one with guaranteed money and a high salary at their current school, or are being offered one by Florida, Penn St., etc.?

Exactly. Prepare yourself for Coach Sumrall (if we’re lucky) or Coach Frank.

Having a control mechanism in place, for coaches salaries, is probably something every AD and University President wants

There is one. Don't agree to pay the asking price. Set the number you are willing to pay and hire someone who will accept that amount.

We all must admit salaries are out of control.

Why? Just because you think $10M per year to coach football is too much? The salaries are what the marketplace dictates. There's nothing forcing LSU, Georgia, Indiana, Texas, Alabama, etc to pay tens of millions for a HC. But clearly those institutions think it's worth it to pay that amount in exchange for winning football.

Landry may be ahead of the curve on this

If you mean trying to publicly strong arm an athletic department into hiring an undesirable candidate, then you might be right. Butch Jones is about to be canned by Arkansas St. He's currently making about $900k a year. I'm sure he would be THRILLED to take a $2M per year "incentive" based contract from LSU.

After that, Landry can use the savings to erect a statue of himself on LSU's campus next to that of Charlie Kirk that all 40k LSU fans filtering into TS to watch a losing team can see as they enter the stadium.

Not gonna happen. What your referencing is them doing it with a nobody.

The second he becomes a somebody, a school WILL offer him one of the crazy deals and he's gone

They either all do it, or they get together and NONE of them do it

None of our last 3 coaches even had Sexton as an agent. In fact all 3 had different agents from one another.

It looks like Penn State to go on the Coordinator route going after Ohio State offensive coordinator. I do think they’ll be a trend of some of these programs not shelling out as much money. It makes more sense to pay the players rather than the coaches. But it will be determined by the market not Landry

There already was a program with the balls to do it. LSU!

They hired a HC no other power conf. school wanted, for a "bargain" contract with incentives. And it worked!!!! He led LSU to a championship and one of the best seasons in the history of the sport.

Yet, surprisingly, no one really followed that model. Except maybe Arkansas (Sam Pittman), who I believe is also in the market for a new HC, right?

Yet, to the second aspect of your argument, the market didn't follow it despite the clear success.

It's not going to take just one school to set the bar. It's going to take multiple schools do so, having great success as a result, and then refusing to pay significant extensions after that success.
