Kiffin compared to Tuberville leaving OM…

Many years ago, perhaps too many for some, Tommy Tuberville left the Rebels to coach on the plains of Auburn. No other teams in between, no years off, just straight to Auburn. I think he was quoted he wouldn’t leave Oxford unless it was in a pine box, yet he left the next week. Fast forward to Kiffin’s departure. Is his departure of OM considered worse because of playoff scenario, leaving the Vols, etc.?I don’t remember exactly how much their fans were irritated back then, but there seems to be way more vitriol this time around.

i think this is much more like Dan Mullen leaving State to coach Florida. hopefully it turns out better for us than it did for FLorida

As I recall, what really chapped their asses, was that it really wasn’t much more than a lateral move. It was Auburn. It’s not like he was going to Bama or Tennessee.

Because Kiffin was a way better coach for Ole Miss than Tubs was, and they know it. Plus they still got Eli Manning as a recruit after Tubs left so there was still plenty of excitement for the future. In their heart of hearts Ole Miss fans know Golding isn't going to be a long term answer, it was desperation to try to retain as many coaches and players for this year as possible, once Chambliss and Lacy leave, the further removed from Kiffin they get and the more Golding builds the program in his image, they know the heights they reached under Kiffin will be extremely difficult to find again.
Plus Auburn isn't really their rival, I know both were in the West so they played every year but losing a coach to LSU is gonna sting a lot more than losing a coach to Auburn.

wasn’t a move all the way to top, but Auburn had won the SEC only 10 years prior to Tuberville being hired.
Ole Miss was on year 36 without one at that time (this will be year 63 without one)

Again, living around these old miss people the Tuberville exodus stung because he swore he'd never leave and they believe Oxford is paradise and no one will ever leave them. But, I will say without hesitation that Lane leaving is worse. Until ole miss fans get over seeing ole miss and oxford as the best place in the world, they will be upset every time a coach leaves.

Auburn is part of the “Haves” of the SEC (although they’re doing a fine job of not showing it over the last 5 years).
Ole Miss is part of the Have Nots
Auburn was having 11-1 seasons in the 80’s while Ole Miss was dreaming of six-win seasons. The 90’s were much the same. So were the next two decades. Tuberville made a GREAT choice leaving Oxford for the Plains. It would be like another coach leaving South Florida for Miami. The disparity between the Rebels and War Hawks is huge. Auburn, Alabama, Georgia, LSU, and Tennessee were the haves when TT left Oxford. All the rest are the haves nots, with South Carolina and Arkansas in the gray area.

I know your story is on Tuberville and OM but the best story on him was at Texas Tech.
He was at dinner with a bunch of recruits and he got a phone call. He stepped out to take it and never came back to the table. He left the restuarant to board a plane and next time he was seen he was stepping off the jet being introduced as Cinncinnati's next HC...

The crazy part is that Ole Miss forced the whole mid season thing.

He was recruiting for Auburn while still at Ole miss. I recall it fondly.
