This season it seems to be a common occurence and it pisses me off, giving up very valuable field position for a team to start a drive at the 40...

Another thread got me thinking back to 2012 and Cameron Gamble also had an issue kicking out of bounds and he did it right before the Yeldon Screen Pass in 2012. Bama started out at the 40 and the rest is history.

Ya ever kicked a ball off the tee in a game? It’s pretty difficult even for the best of kickers.

Wrong, Gamble was still in HS in 2012. Drew Alleman missed a field goal and Alabama started at the 28 for that sequence of downs.

He meant 2014??

Damn OP was way off… Gamble did kickoff against Bama in 2016… we only kicked the ball off once that game

They start at the 35 now. Been that way for a while

If that was my only job on the team, I would make damn sure I could kick straight. Literally that’s all Dibert’s job is. He’s our only recruited scholarship kicker.

I mean that's just false. The vast majority of kickers don't have this problem, even the bad ones.

I think we're trying to do that placement kick thing and force a return vs. just giving them field position at the 35 and sometimes it backfires

We must be asking for him to do something he’s uncomfortable with.

I know how charting works for kickoffs, and shanks are not penalized. Dibert was 7 for 12 of field goals last year in high school, so dead nuts accuracy isn’t something he’s known for.

Kohl’s really values kickoff distance, that’s where his high ranking came from. He CAN kick it far.

That's a good point. Most of us can't kick it straight and through the endzone, but most of us aren't receiving a D1 scholarship to do so either.

Now, I will hedge that, by saying our kick coverage has been arse all year (and it might be personnel). Gameplan might have been to do corner kicks to limit returns, at which point the idea might be that kicking out of bounds is a risk that is still preferable over a huge runback. Not intended, but err on the side of the penalty. Was it Achane and/or Muhammed returning?

Our defense HAD been good, starting at the 35 is like giving up 1 first down. That normally shouldn't be a dealbreaker.

then we should be kicking it out of the back of the endzone.

At his last camp in high school he won the kickoff competition…at one point he had an 81 yd kickoff, followed by a 52 yd one. Followed that one up with a 78 yarder and won the competition based on those two big kicks…

For rankings the 52 is tossed out…in the games though, they are not.

An 81 yard kickoff is fricking far…he CAN kick it far.

I’m tempted to think the kicker is trying some sort of sky kick near the sidelines to get the other team to drop or mishandle the kick. But I agree it’s infuriating to see it dribble out of bounds.

After seeing the issues this year I’ve considered going back for my mba and trying out as a kicker

I mean, how hard can it possibly be

No he didn't (kinda).

I've talked to him about it and he said that if it was up to him, that ball was going out of the back of the endzone every time. Les specifically wanted to pin return men back and wanted those low line drives into the corner.

Another in a long list of special teams failures. While FG/XP kicking has been solid lately, it cost us a game once already. Every other area of special teams is shite. We don't cover punts well, we absolutely suck out loud at covering kickoffs, our return game in each is non-existent, and that's when we don't kick it out of bounds. This group is at the Pelini 2020 level of incompetence.

Polian is supposedly a good recruiter. At this point, he would need a dozen 5 star signees to justify his existence on the staff.
