Kick the ball out the end zone

Why can't we kick the ball out of the end zone like most other teams. Gamble seems to struggle but freshman Conner culp I have heard has a very powerful leg. Sorry if this has been brought up but this is irritating. Geaux Tigers!

Great observation. I wonder who can answer that question?

We're 13th in the country in kickoff defense, giving up only 17 yards a return and no TD. I can't even remember a time when the other team even threatened to break one. Once we stopped kicking it out of bounds, there doesn't seem to be a big downside to kicking it to the goal line and letting our guys cover and make a play.

Bama always makes big plays on special teams. We need to get it together on kickoffs and kickoff/punt coverage. Also, our kickoff returns were terrible this week. We need to do much better. Other than those things, I thought we played very well. And our punter has gotten much better.

How many times does this have to be asked and answered? The pooch kick is being used by a lot of teams now because of the 25-yard line rule. The hope is that we pooch it inside the 10 and the coverage gets there before the returner gets to the 25. Gamble can (and has in games) kick it into the end zone.

Some coach was talking about that this weekend on how some teams take the risk of either a hold or a block in the back penalty.

Several posts have made good points. It's a matter of statistics. If my coverage team can usually get there before the returner breaks a long one, I would rather give the other team the ball on the 20 four times and the 35 once, than five times on the 25. There must be some stats somewhere that would correlate average score per possession with starting field position.

Once we stopped kicking it out of bounds???
That is the reason we are 17th in kickoff return yards because when you kick it out of bounds there is no return yardage. We stop Ole Miss one time inside the 25 (at the 15) they got to or past the 25 every other time.

Kicking out of the end zone is such a bad strategy that it is used by 100% of the NFL teams. Yeah, what do they know.

Even Denver was doing that tonight when McManus can literally kick it into the 10th row in that altitude. Pinned em well inside the 25 each time.

You haven't watched the NFL much this year right? Touchbacks are way down.

Well except the patriots
And several other NFL teams. Don't watch much NFL football?

Ole Miss' starting field position off of kickoffs was:
27
15
25
25 (touchback)
30
26
21
Average starting position of the 24 yard line. So it worked.

Yes, we all understand the pooch concept, but there is still a risk of a big return. I'd just blast it out of the end zone and remove all risk. The extra 5 or so yards we get by tackling them inside the 25 using worth it.

I understand both sides of the argument. However, with every kickoff return, there is not only a chance that they exceed the 25 yard line, but house it. With a touchback, you are absolutely guaranteed that there will not be a score and they start no better than the 25. As conservative as Miles was, I'm surprised he tried the corner kick so often.
ETA: I would like to see the difference in the outcome of drives that start at the 25 vs the 20 etc.

I am by no means a special teams guru, but our guys have allowed next to nothing in return yards. Why not try to put a big hit on the return man and force a fumble? There is 100% no chance of that when the ball sails out the endzone.
Just an observation.

There's also a chance the return team fumbles.
