LOL at all you rantards yesterday making fun of anyone who mentioned KM as a possible replacement for Stud
quote:
"Throwing his name in" doesn't mean LSU is seeking him and wants him to replace Stud. Our other options will be vetted before we settle for someone with zero coaching experience, I can tell you that much.
I understand what you're saying but the people on here yesterday acting like anyone who mentioned KM name was a blithering idiot are looking like the idiots themselves today.
It's not a far fetched concept to think that he might be interested, that LSU would at least consider him as an option and that people in the general fan population would connect the dots and mention his name on this forum.
Anyone acting all high and mighty and posting STAHP and Please make it stop in the other thread yesterday have egg on their faces today.

I agree 100%. I just don't understand how some people are SO certain that he would be a great hire. There is obviously a chance that he could be. There is also a chance he could be a bad hire. There are plenty of sharp dudes that were great players that have been horrendous coaches.
Well, he's already been working with this staff so if Cam approves, it's a home run hire. His name alone would recruit itself.

On the surface, I don't know that I like hiring someone with zero coaching experience to coach up the most imporant unit on the field. Let's see how it all plays out. If he says the right things and Les/Cam are on board, I'm on board.
In my opinion, this would be the ideal coaching candidate, if he were indeed interested. What he lacks in coaching experience, he has in experience playing the position, in the NFL, at an All-Pro level. He knows how to play the position better than almost anyone else on the planet. From a recruiting standpoint, not much else needs to be said.
OL is also a group of positions that relies on technique at the college and pro level. You don't get that good without knowing the fundmentals, and judging whether they are being applied. I wouldn't say the same thing if someone like Randy Moss were to be a receivers coach.

I'm one of them. I just really want this to be a slam-dunk hire. And I'm sure Les and Cam will see to it that it is.
No reason we shouldn't have an absolutely soul-crushingly dominant line every year with the beasts we get up front.

Let's not forget that he played center. The 2nd most cerebral position on the football field. My guess is having him on staff and working with the OL wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.

Is it really that far-fetched? There's a chance that he could be a great teacher, but we don't know that. He doesn't have a track record and hasn't proven himself to be an effective offensive line coach. Being a great NFL player and being a great college coach are two completely different animals.
Exactly. I understand some people's hesitation.
Sometimes great players are just instinctively great and can't exactly pinpoint why that is so or teach others the things that made them great. I doubt Michael Jordan would be a good coach even though many feel that he is the greatest baskeball player to ever live.
History is riddled with great players who were poor coaches:
Wayne Gretzky, Isiah Thomas, Bob Cousy, Bart Starr, Elgin Baylor just to name a few.

I was shocked yesterday to see the idiots on here discussing his personal fitness/weight. The guy is one of the most successful NFL players EVER to come out of LSU. He was a lineman and will likely be in the Hall of Fame!
And some of you fricktards think his body weight being around @15 is a negative in some way? You really think someone else out there knows more about proper technique or has more credibility to recruit than KM? Wow! If that were the case, Studs body would have made him the greatest OL coach in football....

If this guy's name was Tom Smith and not Kevin Mawae

If this guy's name was Tom Smith and not Kevin Mawae, the board would go crazy if we hired a guy with this thin of a resume. Nostalgia has a way of clouding reality.
If Tom Smith was an 8 time Pro Bowler, 8 Time All pro, NFL 200's All decade team, NFLPA president then i think people would probably give him a chance.
Mawae has also Gad at Vanderbilt and was an assistant in Buffalo i think

This is the confusion. By all accounts Mawae isn't one of those players who just relied on instinct and talent. His comments on the OL's lack of technique this year tell me a good bit. If he were to just say "yeah they sucked" then it's a different matter, but he wouldn't be breaking down film if he was just tossing out anecdotal shite like that. Like I said, I have full faith in Cam to be able to access a position coach's aptitude.

Can he recruit??
Who knows, but he could sure as hell play. 4 yr. starter at LSU and 8 time ALL Pro selection.
I'm not sure how many other OL coaches we could get who would have that type resume.
There is a lot to be said for a guy who played the game that well having the respect of recruits. imo

He has worked with the Bills and last year helped the LSU staff in film breakdown.

Would be a home-run hire if true!
Les, make this happen. This guy wouldn't even have to recruit...he was the best. The kids will line up to learn from him.
