Vincent had holes you could drive a truck through. He was an average LSU back - that's all.

Vincent had some great quickness and was a good receiving back

As a freshman, he had the GOAT oline, but some of the cuts he made were nasty, especially vs UGA

So in your eyes Faulk has the record??

Well he ran for more yards his freshman year, even did ask in less games

Ya'll can say what you want and post all the stats you want .... BUT the BEST freshman RB in LSU history was Dalton Hilliard.... The things he did on the field were amazing in his 1st year.............

I don't understand why they can't amend older people's stats to include bowl games. It's not like it would be very difficult to do. It would get more difficult the further back you go, but the last 30 years would be pretty simple.

This is similar to Charles Alexander's single season record, 1686 in 11 games and something like 197 in the bowl that year.

no slight to Fournette, just an FYI, because he keeps getting listed as the top freshman rusher in LSU history, and that's not correct.
I've always heard that Fournette was getting touted as having the record for the most total yards or all-purpose yards as a freshman.

I think you'll find that Fournette owns those records for freshmen.

I've seen the rushing yards mentioned more than all purpose.

from Fournette's LSUsports bio:

quote:

Lived up to expectations as one of the most highly-touted signees in LSU history by setting a school freshman rushing record with 1,034 yards

Kevin Faulk has the LSU freshman rushing yardage record

Given my favorite back was Hilliard, I was always pissed when they altered the stat to include postseason games, because it took the freshman record from Hilliard, who had a MONSTER freshman year in 1982 with 901 yards rushing and 11TD plus another 5 receiving and gave it to Vincent who needed an additional three games to get to 1,000.

But honestly, I don't care how they record the stats, but all players stats ought to at least be compiled the same way...ie go back and count the bowl games at least for the guys prior to 2002/3. Sure...they'll get screwed because they played less total games, but at least it'll be closer.

On so you would take Vincent over Leonard and Faulk is what you're saying

well i will say this. JV crushed it in our 2 biggest games at the end of hte season. 200 yards in the SECCG isn't something to scoff at

The best stats that I could find says that Fournette has more all-purpose yards than Faulk.

. . . . . . . . . Faulk . . . Fournette
Rush . . . . 1,086 . . . . . 1,034
Receive . . . . 90 .. . . . . . 127
Return . . . . . 36 .. . . . . . 625
TOTAL . . 1,212 . . . . . 1,786

really wish I'd seen Hilliard play, I barely even remember him as a Saint.

as an aside, the numbers Ro and Reed put up in 01 are generally reported without their Sugar Bowl stats. so that's 400+ passing yds and 200+ receiving missing for each, and I think they still have a number of LSU/ SEC records.

the confusion comes in because prior to 02 or 03, when a player's stat totals were given, their bowl games weren't included. so you generally see that Faulk had 852, which is his regular season total only

Hilliard had over 900 yards as freshman, regular season only

Hilliard came to LSU in the same class as Gary James. James was better known prior to their freshmen year, but Hilliard had a better freshman year.

Both of them went on to play in the NFL.

And soph and jr and sr years.........

James wasn't crap compared to Dalton.... Nothing against Garry, But he was not even in the same zip code at LSU as Dalton........

But 12 more attempts. The amount of games means nothing. To match faulKS output Fournette would've needed 50 more yards on 12 more attempts.

I agree. The records for today's college football are a bit misleading because you're only counting 11 games for guys in the 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's. While today's players get the benefit of at least 12 games and on some occasions 15 games.

Actually, until the 70's there were only 10 regular season games for most teams. The common 11-game schedule lasted well into the 2000's. In spite of great bowl-game numbers for the likes of Faulk, Mealey and Alexander their official season stats are what they are; only ll regular season games each. Perhaps some day the NC2A will retroactively include the heretofore uncounted bowl game stats but that isn't likely.

give LF7 those additional 11 carries and what would he have had?

Not a valid comparison, A&M actually tackeld on defense in Faulk's freshman year.

And sadly underrated by a few LSU fans - not only does he have an argument for LSU's #1 back, EVER (with all due respect to Billy Cannon) - he is arguably the best all-purpose back in SEC history - think about that for a second - if there was a Heisman/Biletnikoff/O'Brien - etc. type national award for "All Purpose" back, Faulk would have been a top finalist and likely would have won it TWICE.

In 4 years, he had 6,833 all purpose yards, with "only" 4,557 of that in rushing. Try to process that.

(Plus - he can tell you exactly how much a major college football team weighs, carrying them on his back for several games, most notably against Houston when it appeared he played all 22 positions at the same time - at least in the second half.)
