Kelly: LSU expects 10 of top 11 players on defense in terms of snap count to return

Major Burns, Greg Penn III, Harold Perkins, Andre' Sam, Sage Ryan, Maason Smith, Sai'vion Jones, Omar Speights, Zy Alexander, Bradyn Swinson and Jordan Jefferson make up the top 11 snap getters for the Tigers this season, according to Pro Football Focus.

Sam, Speights and Jefferson are not eligible to return in 2024. But assuming that Kelly's calculations don't include players who can't come back for another year, Mekhi Wingo, Javien Toviano and Whit Weeks would be the next three players in terms of highest snap count who are eligible to return next season, per PFF.
Apparently, the staff believed Smith and/or Wingo were returning but neither did. Also, Sage Ryan entered the portal for a bit.
I support Kelly a ton and he has done great but not sure why we say stuff like this unnecessarily if we aren't 100% sure. That's Ed O territory.

"We were taking numbers on defense to right the ship, relative to our defensive structure last year. We’re not going to have to do that. We’re counting 10 of our 11 players with the most snaps coming back next year. Some may say that’s not a great thing, but we think it is because we have experience. We didn’t have that last year.”

I don't claim to be very smart, but by my calculations that is 7 of the top 11 players

So saying you expect 10 of 11 and get 9 of 11 is Ed O territory?

One player unexpectedly not doing what is probably best for his career is not Ed O territory, my man.

He actually didn't even just say it was "expected."
He said they were counting 10 of 11 on defense who would return, that's inaccurate just based on players who have no eligibility remaining.
Even when adjusted for that, it's still only 9 of 11 and another went into the portal but later came back out.
It just isn't good to give "false hope" in my opinion because we aren't returning 10/11 of the defense, it's more like 7.

I thought his statement was in terms of the bowl game and not next year. I may not be remembering it right tho

doubling down on a shite take, nice

gotta remember coaches are dealing with agents in addition to families now. Entire new coaching stuff coming in too. The math becomes a lot more complicated with so many factors.

How often do these kids say one thing and do something else?
Posted on 1/10/24 at 12:37 pm to SidewalkTiger
The staff can advise these kids all they want but when they have others in their ear selling them to move on, it’s hard to go against it.
The only benefit to Smith leaving, for his sake, is to just take your shot before another injury occurs. Other than that, his move make no sense. His tape is bad, and he needed one solid season from start to finish to be considered a 2-3 round pick.
He’d be lucky to get drafted now.

Family probably talked to Maason and said he needs to take his chance now. 4th position coach in 4 years (including HS) has to be frustrating.

He was talking about for the bowl game jackass .
Now return to secrant and troll Aggie

Now you're coming across as not just dumb but also soft.

It’s not even what Kelly was discussing. Of course we weren’t getting back that many guys for this season just based on eligibility.
He said it in a presser before the bowl game . He said they were expecting to have all our starters but one available for the bowl game
I think zye was the one we knew we wouldn’t have or he thought we weren’t gonna have sage at that time

You’re 100% correct and nobody should even respond to this thread in any other way now
I’m not gonna dig up the press conference but someone else can
