going into last year everyone was saying it was going to be a years long rebuild. now, because kelly hit on the portal in a big way last year, people's expectations went sky high.

it was fools gold last year, i'm just happy lsu is not a total embarrassment dumpster fire like O left the team.

yall need to put this into perspective and realize this is going to take some time.

now, if kelly doesn't shitcan house at the end of the year, we may have some larger issues

Kelly was 4-11 vs top 10 in 12 seasons at Notre Dame.

Brian Kelly is currently 2-4 at lsu vs top 10 teams.

You’re not wrong

Last year accelerated the timeline and raised expectations for fans. That doesn’t mean the timeline of the program changed.

So even with a depleted roster he’s better than he was at Notre Dame.

Disagree, the reaction to this season would be exponentially worse if he hadn’t made it to the SEC champ game last year.

It doesn’t take a genius to realize why it hasn’t been linear. It’s not that hard

Eh, I don't think that's been nearly as impactful as LSU pumping offensive statistics up against a bunch of bad teams.

This lead to "best offense in the country, if we can just get a couple stops from the defense we can win out and get in the playoffs" flawed mentality and unrealistic expectations.

You’re exactly right.

Most people don’t understand that success is not linear. It’s iterative.

You don’t have a straight line of improvement to the top. There will be mountains and valleys.

There are legitimate gripes, but the overall expectations are staggering considering where O left this program.

He had MUCH better defensive players last year and did nothing to maintain that.

Can you tell us the timeline of the program then?

Agree. As far the time line… sometime in the near future. There can only be one.

So he should have lost more games?

OK.

So what’s your point? No fans know the timeline of the program so we can’t judge if it going good or not?

Kelly is the one who said this team was a year away. As things stand, they will be significantly further away next year than this year and with the trend moving downward.

His recruiting has not been awful, but underwhelming based on filling needs. He has failed to fill huge gaps in his team with failed HS recruiting at key positions. He has missed on transfers to fill the holes as well and built no long term foundation.

If anyone is to blame for the overblown expectations it was the approach Kelly took last year with trying to win quickly.

Chizik won a National title too early, right? It out unfair expectations on him.

In the end, if fans saw a foundation being built and not losing out on significant Louisiana talent at times, then you have a point.

In the end, Kelly took a shortcut to early success and it will likely lead to a delay in building a foundation, and squandered the benefits of last year’s division title.

The point is the expectations for 2023 were through the roof and going into year 2 of an organizational and roster overhaul was way too soon to judge the trajectory of the program.

If they both aligned, great. If not, let’s let it play out more. Either way, I’m not making any sweeping judgements.

You know what his point was. No one expected the success we had last year considering where the roster was when he took over. The result was elevated expectations which were potentially unwarranted.

There's nothing wrong with being disappointed, particularly in the defensive play. But there is a lot of wailing and gnashing of teeth that is beyond the pale.

Were they? We had doubts about Daniels (he obv exceeded expectations). We knew the defense was mostly new players and would struggle, especially in the secondary.

I think the most optimistic expectations were 10-2. Now we're looking at 9-3. Given the insane player attrition on the defensive side which was already bad and thin, it isn't that hard to see why the team is where it is.
