Karl Bushby soon to complete 28 year long walk from Chile to England

He started walking when he was 29. He'll be 57 when he finishes.
His original goal was to finish his walk in 2012, and actually got to the Chukchi Peninsula (crossing the Bering Strait on foot in winter) way back in 2006. But then he faced various off and on visa problems with the Russian government that greatly held up the progress of his walk. (He periodically would get expelled back to Mexico City by Russian authorities and then would begin his walk from the point where it previously stopped when the Russian authorities let him back in the country.) He was in Kazahstan at the time the Ukraine War got worse in 2023, so he had to swim the Caspain Sea to Azerbaijan since it was doubtful that Russia would let him back in and it was doubtful that Iran would let him in either. He is supposed to swim across the English Channel around October 4 and then finish walking to his boyhood home about a month later. Supposedly this whole walk was due to some bar bet about whether he could do the walk.
By the way, he had a son who was 5 at the time he started the walk (and is now 33), so pretty much was the world's most absent dad ever.

I have been seeing this for many years but never actually looked into the details.
Did he do it in bits and pieces and just go back to work?
Or did he just...not work at all and keep walking? How did he live? How did he fund things? How would he fly back or get to the location
The whole thing is beyond my comprehension

He has had various sponsors of his walk. He's probably only had only had a "real job" for about 5-7 years in his life (assuming that he got his first "real job" around age 22-24 like most people do), which would hardly be enough to fund this walk.
One of the problems he faced (on top of Russian authorities constantly kicking him out and letting him back in) was that he initially lost a lot of sponsors after the 2008 financial crash. But he later regained sponsors as his walk became more famous.

Let it be said to all the people who feel they have no purpose, you can literally make one up.
This man did so in a drunken haze one night and simply committed to it for nearly three decades.
