He’s accomplished at least one of those things — winning a starting job.

Jefferson, a Destrehan native, has surpassed a handful of more experienced, taller, bigger and stronger receivers. Coach Ed Orgeron earlier this spring proclaimed him as, for now, a starter with Jonathan Giles.

quote:

Giles views the duo as 1 and 1A, he said. So does passing game coordinator and receiver guru Jerry Sullivan.

“Coach Sullivan even said we’re interchangeable,” Giles said. “I can be at the Z. He can be at the F. I can be at the F. He at the Z. We can rotate any time.”

quote:

Justin arrived during camp last fall, the final 2017 signee. It took by midseason to catch up with other freshmen who had been with the team since June. It took by November for him to surpass a few players who had been with the program for more than a year.

It took just a few weeks into spring practice for him to surpass the likes of 6-foot-6 juniors Stephen Sullivan and Dee Anderson and 6-4 junior Drake Davis.

The new Jefferson: Justin Jefferson skyrocketing up LSU's receiver depth chart

Unlike Tory Carter (2nd to the lowest ranked player in the 2017 class), it's taking Justin the lowest ranked 2017 recruit a little longer to see significant playing time.

Justin Jefferson
Destrehan (Destrehan, LA)
WR 6-2 180
0.7982
National ranking: NA
WR: 310
State: 77

Cool news for a player busting his arse off no doubt. Always wanted Sullivan and Davis to mature into the freaks they could be though.

in the set of practice pics that were posted yesterday, Jefferson, Dillon, Sullivan and Marshall were front of the line and talking to (coach) Sullivan in every shot

stands to reason that those four + Giles are the top five WRs as of now

Athleticism =/= skill and technique. I also always wanted Drake to hone in his skills, but something tells me he either has nubs for hands or cant get the playbook down. Justin Jefferson should get more props for being a largely unknown to a potential 3rd or 2nd option at receiver

He wass A very late qualifier which will hurt your ranking. He signed in like August.

But also Tory Carter was the third ranked FB in the country.

FB just don’t often get more than 4 stars

I read this article this morning in The Advocate. Good stuff. He sounds like a good kid too that's committed to being a great Tiger on and off the field. I'm definitely gonna be pulling for him.

Sullivan is talking to himself. This is why you don’t hire the elderly.

If you watch the practice videos he has the best feet of all the WRs.

Sullivan never has to correct him with his feet during individuals

If you watch his high school tape, you can see why he's moving up the charts fast. Dude explodes out of his breaks, he catches everything with his hands, and he runs really nice routes.

I'm not sure how his recruitment went so quiet, but we were lucky to land him when we did.

Kind of similar to Gage earning his way to starting spot.

Good for him.

In the case of the latter, that couldn’t have taken much to do. I have yet to see anything all that impressive out of Dee Anderson.

I would imagine having two older brothers that have come through the program aided him tremendously in what to expect, how to prepare, what to do and not to do, etc. The other wr's didn't arrive with those intangibles.

Eta: just read the article. Looks like this point was made.

I believe he was an expected academic casualty then when final grades came out in May his senior year he was a qualifier and we offered shortly after to add him to our class.
