You only learn with experience. He got a taste of it and he’ll learn

And add at least two major penalties that were missed by the refs (block in the back on Branch’s return and a hold on that would have negated that great one-handed catch).
Those two penalties alone cost LSU about 75 yards in field position.
To take USC’s perspective, you could argue the block on the back was more of a light push and shouldn’t t have been called, but I think it was significant enough to be a penalty.
You also could argue that that ‘hold’ was more of a headlock to keep the defender from getting by, but I think the headlock was obvious and forceful enough to impact our defender, which qualifies as a hold to me (though I watched the chiefs game last night and saw a similar play that went uncalled). So maybe refs let that go, but they shouldn’t. That’s a desperation move that should be flagged.

How have yall not realized the trend that BKs teams are MUCH better in October than they are in September? BK struggles to identify his best personnel in camp but after a few games he figures it out and we get rolling.

Even with the bad ref calls and non calls, the stupid penalties by our players, the one handed catches by USC and the missed opportunities on the fumbles and batted balls, and our QB starting his first regular season game with a new OC calling his first ever game we still had an opportunity to put the game away with 2 minutes left and USC having only 20 points.
This is why I remain so optimistic. Yes, I am frustrated by the lack of discipline and general sloppiness we have seen in game 1's under CBK. But to still be in a position to end the game after nearly every break going the other way. clearly we were doing something right.
Clean up the selfish penalties, be little more aggressive on offense, and we'll be okay.
i've been pretty much on the side of logic and not overreacting. pointed out that we're still semi depth depleted\not as rich in talent in areas that we were accustomed to, so i'm not going to overreact to a game where we could have won, against a good team who had almost everything that could either way, go their way.....and we were right there.
i will say this as my 1 "negative". overall the defense looked improved. tenacity. penetration. pressures. tackling for the most part. lack of confusion. all those things look to be improved on, but after finally watching the game on tv after only seeing it in the stadium, what is a little concerning still is the drives the defense gave up at the end of both halves. not sure if it was scheme to prevent etc, but USC had no problem getting in position for scores at the end of both halves. we have to improve in a lot of areas in small doses, this is something we need to get better at in a big dose.
overall still think this team will improve immensely on both sides of the ball and we will be a good team this season.

From an experience/talent standpoint the secondary is just not that great. The coaches know that. I was chastised for making a post a few days before the game saying Sloan had mentioned to a booster group how there was still much concern about the secondary. That bared out on Sunday. It wasn't nearly as bad as last year. Guys, for the most part, knew where to be. But you have vets that just aren't great players and young players with very little experience. That being the case, I think Baker took the approach at the end of both halves that as long as USC was on their side of the 50 (or at least out of FG range) with little time left on the clock he was going to play conservative to try to prevent a big play against a questionable secondary. Once USC got close to FG range he was going to dial up the pressure. It's just so happens that on both occasions he was probably a play late in dialing up the pressure because USC hit big passes with less than 20 seconds left to get into FG range. I won't be surprised, at all, to see him turn up the pressure a bit earlier in those end of half drives going forward.
Everyone has a pre-game plan/strategy. But until you see it in action you can't be 100% sure it will be effective. Now that the coaches have seen their plans in action they will make adjustments accordingly.

For the most part you are correct but there were a handful of plays where they loaded the box. We needed to take our shots when they gave us the right look and too often we just ran the play called.
There was some of that but it was only a handful of plays as you said. Most of the loaded boxes I saw were either obvious rushing situations or against heavy/tight formations. I will say that their safeties were crashing hard whenever they saw run, though.
On the need to potentially check out if some plays - I wonder how the helmet communication changes things here. The helmet communication cuts off when the play clock hits 15 seconds. I didn’t pay attention to how exactly LSU was getting plays in but with us going no huddle, I assume they are also signaling plays from the sideline.
Theoretically this means that if you line up fast enough, Sloan might have time to communicate some checks to Nussmeier directly based on defensive alignment. But it’s a double-edged sword that I can easily see going the other way as well - if Sloan spends the entire communication window talking Nuss through situational stuff on the play call, 15 seconds doesn’t give you a ton of time to check to something else. It’s an interesting aspect of the game that I think will be a learning process for OC’s and QB’s as the season goes on.

Kelly and only Kelly is to blame for last season’s nightmare defense. It always falls to the HC.

Wish Nuss would have kept and ran on a couple of read option plays. Missed 2 critical first downs because he didn't

I hate it for him because outside of that throw he basically played a flawless game. Rewatching that play over and over when Anderson turns his head it throw off the rhythm and Nuss double clutched which almost always leads to spiking the ball into the ground. He will get better and will still have a great season for us.

Nuss played really well. Nuss will win a lot of games

It's clear he took the loss hard. You can hear it in his voice and see it in his demeanor. Said he's going to re-live that missed throw to Anderson for the next 6 days until the next game. Hate the loss, but I think Nuss and the team will be fine. They are still playing for a playoff spot and the sense of urgency is now accelerated.
This is one of several reasons I really like Nuss. I was critical of some of his late game mistakes, but I also figured he would react to the game like this. He’s a coach’s kid, so I bet he’s harder on himself than anyone here will ever be, and that’s exactly the mindset you what in your starting QB. He’ll get better and grow from it.

8-4 man, BK is our coach. It’s a cyclical thing, lose and reality hits, then the board starts to brighten as the week goes on and all the “negative people” get bashed, then it happens again in four weeks.
You’ve been full of bullshite, sky is falling predictions the last two seasons and haven’t been right yet. Not even broken fricking clock right.

I've probably said it 4-5 times on here, but I think they just need to let Nuss play and be aggressive. That game looked like he had been so programmed to limit mistakes that he probably was overthinking everything and not taking chances.
I agree. There’s taming the gunslinger enough to not put you in difficult positions and there’s going too far. It feels like the staff leaned into taking what they give you too hard.

You have to give Lynn credit. He mixed up what they were doing and he did it out of just a few pre-snap looks. One example was they would show 2 high Safeties, but then blitz a CB at the edge and bring a Safety down to replace him. They would drop a Safety in when we ran 12 and 13 personnel because we weren’t throwing out of those sets. Kelly even admitted this week that they were too predictable there and have to throw out of those sets. Lynn gave Nuss and the staff a lot to think about.
I think it’s a good sign that Nuss performed as well as he did vs a really good DC with a game plan that gave us problems. A lot of DCs we will face this season aren’t in the same class as Lynn.
