I don't want to assume, but what it sounds like you may be getting at is would it count as an impermissible benefit if they paid some level of rent on the house as long as the rent wasn't paid by someone else? And the answer is that if the amount paid in rent by the family is so disproportionate to the fair market value of the property, then yes, the NCAA would find it is an impermissible benefit. Essentially, it would be seen as an improper donation as the amount difference in what the home could bring on the market vs what the person actually paid would be seen as an improper financial benefit by the property owner (likely booster) to the family.

I wonder if they just paid $900 a month and the rest is in arrears letting the owner deduct it as a loss on his taxes?

Then that would still be a financial benefit to the renter, especially if no adverse action (e.g. eviction, negative report on credit, etc.) is taken. Basically the renter (Zion's family) would be able to live in an extremely nice home above their means at an extremely reduced rate, even if on paper it states they were to pay the market rate, without having anything negative happen to them.

And I'm not a tax attorney; but I'm pretty sure that the IRS would have some claims against the property owner for filing fraudulent returns.

You can get into a lot of trouble renting below market value to family members.... I have to think there are rules about renting below value by that much to “special friends” also..

It’s came in a while back and tried stopping excessive write downs...especially cognitive rental property to day job income...

Hope the it’s gets involved next.....

You do realize that Jordy works for a station that is sponsored by ESPN, and Dickie V works for ESPN, and they need to be respectable towards each other right? I dont' think things would go over well for Jordy if he was the reason ESPN dropped their sponsorship of the station b/c of how he treated DickieV, and i'm sure Gordy has talks with him about how much he can go after DickieV.

Lester you believe Joe acted properly in suspending Wade based on a Yahoo Article. I would assume that a claim in court would carry the same weight. Do you think Coach K should be suspended?
