TT was a top 5 NBA pick. Mickey does great things but at times does some very freshman things. Tyrus had WAY WAY WAY MORE passion than Mickey shows, and had crazy heart. Mickey is more talented 100%, but Tyrus was as competitive as a player can get, that's what made him special.

So just because TT screamed and yelled that means he is more passionate, competitive, and has more heart that Mickey? ok....

TT was also pretty lazy sometimes too.

And Mickey is also younger than TT was when he had an impact on LSU bball. And already way more polished than TT ever was. And the impact on the defensive end is still the same So just as good on the defensive end, but better on the offensive end.

Hes not as exciting as TT, but hes a better player.

When Mickey helps to carry LSU to a final four, let's revisit this thread...

Until then, its TT all the way...

So the only way to judge/compare individual players is by how far his team advanced in the tourney... right right...

That 2006 team was loaded. TT, Big Baby, Garrett Temple, Taz, D Mitchell, etc.

And a lot of people forget that Big Baby averaged damn near 19pts and 10 rebs.

Well Tyrus also had Glen Davis, Tasmin Mitchell, Darrell Mitchell, and Garrett Temple

So this isn't about team goals. His play just reminds me of Thomas

People are truly showing their dumbness in this thread. Mickey's game is solid, but let's not act like he has an array of offensive moves in his arsenal. I like his game, but on the collegiate level Thomas is a step above.

Thomas' blocks and dunks electrified the crowd and inspired his teammates. Everyone is forgetting how good Thomas was that year, because he flamed out in the pros.

If u put the two on the same team, Thomas would be starting over Mickey.

Personally, Mickey reminds me of Varnado - and that's more of JV as a junior and senior.

Quarterman = Garrett Temple

I wish we had a Marcus Thornton-a-like.

No way Mickey leaves after this season, right?

Who will take over JOB's beast mode for LSU next season?

They were both thin shot-blockers who got the majority of their points in sort-of garbage shot or transition situations but with a little bit of a jump shot here or there. they will naturally be compared.

Mickey is averaging more minutes than Thomas did, but per minute Thomas has more points and most other stats. He had a pretty big edge in FG% as well.

Mickey plays more minutes. Has a bit higher FT%.

Tyrus got to the line more, had a higher block %, higher STL %, lower TO %.

Biggest difference is rebounding, TT was a much better one.

LINK .

This lists Tyrus has 1" taller, I'm thinking his wingspan is even larger.

Tyrus and stromile were about as comparable as 2 players could be.

Mickey is much different.

Mickey has more of a face up game than those two guys ever developed. He doesn't have quite their unreal raw athleticism, but who does?

If we're comparing, he's more like a somewhat skinnier Brandon Bass.

Mickey is a lot smoother than Tyrus was. Has a better faceup jumper not to mention the best timing for blocked shots I have ever seen.

OK a few things to remember:
Tyrus was a role player at McKinley. He was a 6'5 center who ran around and blocked shots and dunked. He blew up in AAU and got a late run of offers, but he was a project. I remember some complaining about him getting a scholarship offer.

He came to LSU, grew three inches and his athleticism got even better as he grew. He never really developed the ball skills he needed to be a three and he didnt shoot well enough to be consistent stretch four in the League so caught between positions and lacking specific skills, he washed out. The confrontation with Paul Silas didnt help matters.

Mickey is a comparable athlete who does more than compete with energy and athleticism. he seems like a much more evolved version of Tyrus Thomas and I think he could have a nice career in the League. especially if he learns to consistently shoot the corner three ball.

yea, mickey has been playing in his current frame for a couple years. tyrus was seemingly learning on the fly, was more raw than mickey and relied on his athleticism a ton. tyrus may be a better leaper but mickey has the tools and the game to have a nice long career.

He's not a malcontent so no he's not Tyrus. He's greater.

Chad Ford currently has him ranked in like 90's. Think Martin in the 50's.

Bridgewater sat behind me last night. He's such a wide bodies guy. He looks like an NFL defensive end.

Anyways, he says he's all good to go for next season. But he said he still can't practice with the team - I didn't push for specifics, he was there to watch the game and not talk to me. Nahmean

You tell me I'm being way too literal and yet you say this:

Similar body types
Great shot blockers
Monstrous Dunkers

...but nothing alike!!!!!!

Why didn't you just say Mickey is better than Glover Jackson? After all, he's a similar body type. The reason is because he was a totally different type player the same way these three are. Tyrus and Stro were much more similar than Mickey is to either one. Mickey gets challenged a lot because people don't feel his presence, whereas Stro and TT were known and people didn't challenge them the same way. Both Stro and TT were far more explosive, but Mickey is way more disciplined and has better timing. Their offensive games don't resemble each other at all.

Again, I just think it's ridiculous to rate them against each other because they are what you remember as the latest, greatest, basketball athletes at LSU.

I was wrong on his growth earlier, but right on the neck injury. Here's some additional info I dug up.

quote:

FRESHMAN SEASON (2004-05)
Granted a medical redshirt after suffering a neck injury in the preseason practices ... Aggravated the injury in his only appearance, a pre-season exhibition game.

In high school, Thomas was only 5'10" as a freshman. Thomas then tried out for his varsity basketball team but was cut. He only played organized basketball in his junior and senior years at McKinley High School in Baton Rouge, but never really built up enough recruiting hype to be considered a top 100 prospect. As a junior he was a mere 6-6 and 190 pounds, and when he officially committed to LSU, they did not initially have a scholarship for him. One later opened up when a JUCO recruit was kicked off his team and his scholarship offer was rescinded. Thomas grew to 6-7 ½, 200 pounds as a high school senior, and averaged 16 points, 12 rebounds and six blocks per game, good enough for the all-second team in Louisiana.

Mickey has a higher ceiling that T.T. ever did. He is much more polished and has a much more rounded offensive game than Thomas did as a first year player.
I think he looks somewhat like Chris Bosh of the Heat and could develop a similar skill set.
