Joe Sloan on “That Kid Jayden” - “He came here with no promises”

First off, if you haven’t seen the 4-part series LSU put out about Jayden Daniels.. go watch it!
That Kid Jayden
In part one, Joe Sloan says the following shortly after the intro: “I mean coming to LSU, there were other opportunities for him. He came here with no promises and an opportunity to compete, and he always - he challenged himself that way.”
I know this was a big talking point last year and it continued into the off-season after Jayden announced his return. Many people felt strongly that Jayden must have been promised the starting job when he transferred here. That obviously died down over this season, but I continue to see it suggested periodically (especially as it relates to any future transfers).
Other relevant comments from the first video:
Daniels in his July 2022 pre-season interview: “..after leaving my last school where I was the starter, obviously to come here and hopefully start and, you know, compete at the highest level..”
Daniels in a more recent interview conducted for these videos: “When I was named the starter it was kind of like, just, a joy and - you know - just that relief of knowing that I can come here and no matter what in my life I’m going to be able to compete. And then at the end of the day if I bet on myself the odds are good.”
There’s a little more commentary from Denbrock and Kelly, but y’all get the idea.
Then there’s Brian Kelly’s commentary from his Tuesday press conference about how he addresses potential transfers with other players in the QB room. He said:
“This is a world that we live in that has got to be handled with transparency. If not, you know, you’re gonna find yourself without the right personnel. So if we were to ever do anything in the transfer portal relative to a quarterback, we’re talking to everybody in that room. We’re talking to recruits, we’re talking to everybody. It’s about transparency. It’s about honesty,…”
I am of the opinion that this staff is not making any promises to anyone in the portal. I think guys are being told they’ll have to come in and compete. There may be other coaches that are willing to make those types of promises, but I don’t expect it from coaches with a lot of experience and success. As soon as anyone else finds out, it completely undermines his messages about transparency and accountability.
What say tRant? Am I just naive?

You can never guarantee someone a starting job BUT, if they're going after a kid in the portal, chances are there's a need. So getting to 'come here and compete' is code for we need you and based on what we've seen, you'll probably start.

People on here swore he was promised the job

I don't think so, and I agree with you completely. Competent coaches don't promise guys starting jobs. They only offer the opportunity to compete. There might be some concessions about what that opportunity looks like (in how they envision reps will be split), but to outright promise a guy a job with no competition pretty much undermines everything that good coaches stand for.

Yeah, I absolutely believe they are giving guys strong hints along the lines of “we really believe you can be our starter next year.” That is a lot different than promising a guy in the portal that he’s going to be the starter.
I just think that a good staff is going to make the player actually compete for it in camp. If you start making promises, you’re lying to somebody - either the guys on your roster or the guys you’re bringing in.

That was great. What a magical year he had

I'll admit I was a doubter that he would ever master his position.
I'm happy that I was wrong.
1st He is a nice person who deserves it.
2nd He is a hard worker who earned every accolade that he has gotten.
Hope he has a long successful NFL career.
It would be great to see he and Burrow in competition. Two LSU Quarterbacks, both with a Heisman Trophy, competing for the Super Bowl.
What a story.

Well to be fair Myles Brennan was the second coming of Johnny Unitas, Peyton Manning, and Joe Montanna combined according to some on this board

There are a lot of folks on tRant who cannot differentiate nuanced statements. To them that was a promise. To Jayden, it was an opportunity he had to earn. At 21 he was more mature and savvy than a significant portion of tRant.

What are the odds IF JD5 was "promised" the job, Sloan would openly admit that? 0% with Nuss still here and thinking that he and JD5 competed for QB1. We'll never know if JD5 was promised or not but just because Sloan said he wasn't doesn't guarantee it's true.
At this point, does it even matter?

I also know some people. He was not promised the job, basically was told “we like your chances here, but you’ve got to come in and win the job”.
