re: JJ is "absolutely" satisfied with this team's effort right now.

Fellas fellas fellas. U know damn well behind closed doors JJ ripped into them.
quote:This isn't a valid excuse in basketball and the only young guys are Blakeney and Simmons.
We still have a young team.
Duke won it with 3 freshman leading the charge last year and UK goes to the final 4 every other year with true freshman.
quote:Exactly what he needs to do IMO. Light a fire.
Also JJ ain't gonna go out and pull a PM and bash his players publicly.

Chill on this one.

I dont care. And dont compare him to Miles/CPM or anyone else who has actually won championships. Johnny doesnt have the luxury of downplaying this situation at all.

I downvoted, but I want you to know I was vicariously downvoting JJ.

All I can picture right now is Quarterman's beautiful sequence of an air ball layup, turnover, and foul +1 on the other end last game.
he got down the floor to foul=effort

I don't follow basketball all that much, but when you have the #1 recruit as well as another top recruit in Blakeney as well as starters like Hornsby and Quarterman returning as well as Victor, etc. losing more than 4 or 5 games for the year should be unacceptable. Why can Calipari consistently take a whole bunch of one and dones and win the championship and we cannot get to tourney.
Gotta be the coach. Really, no excuse and it's not the same as the Miles situation - Miles performed almost exactly up to pre season expectations.

That is hard to do.
And he's done a version of that sequence probably 5-6 times this year.

He's not going to throw his players under the bus in the media. I can respect that. Privately, however, I doubt he's happy with the effort. Still, something happened between Wed. and Saturday of last week to cause him to lose the team. Except for Blakeney, LSU as a whole did not give a shite in a game that was as close to a must win as it gets.
I don't buy for one second that Simmons sat because of "academic issues". (a) what possibly could have come up in the two school days between Bama and Tenn.? and (b) Who gives a shite? Simmons isn't coming back. Jones has even acknowledged as much. What difference does it make if he is skipping class or making poor grades? The day after LSU's season ends he's withdrawing from school anyway.
They played hard against A&M. They played poorly, but with effort, against Bama. IMO, I think Jones losing the team occurred due to a combination of two reasons:
1. Jones' decision to go to a zone defense against Bama forced the players to play a defense they were clearly not suited to play and had the effect of slowing down the game to Bama's pace. I think the players completely lost all faith in Jones' ability to coach right then and there because they knew they were going to have to bear the brunt of criticism for what seemed to be a mind-boggling decision from the sidelines. That's not LSU's game. They played right into Bama's hands.
2. Jones probably called the team out for essentially losing a game at the FT line for the second time in a week. FTs in my opinion are the largest facet of the game completely controlled by the players. Jones can't hold their hands and make them work constantly on FT shooting on their own. NCAA rules only allow the coach to be involved in so much practice time. FT shooting is something these guys have to perfect (as much as possible) on their own. If Jones did call them out on it, I don't blame him at all for doing so.
With that, I think each side had valid criticisms of one another that reached a tipping point after the game. I think the players probably felt the loss was on Jones (going to the zone defense) and Jones felt a big part of the loss was on the players (horrible FT shooting) What came out of it was a division in the team and Saturday's result.
When the announcers are noticing and saying ON AIR that it didn't look like the team gave a shite during pregame shoot-around, you know they really didn't give a shite. It's sad, but it appears the relationship between the coaches and players is completely broken.

I don't know if he is upset privately, during the game he doesn't appear to be upset with bad play. He doesn't bench kids for bad shots or lack of effort. He might actually believe what he said. frick JJ

Did u just compare us to UK and Duke? Duke also had veterans to help that squad. So did Kentucky. There is not one bulldog leader get in your face on this team. Not one. Hornsby is a lead by expample guy. We have a star that plays with no heart at times and is also passive. We have Mr. Quaterman who decides all of a sudden he is bigger than the team and wants to play hero ball. Who know what Patterson is doing? I'm conviced he is a space cadet at times. Where is the leadership. There is none and thats the true problem with the team to go along with JJ deficiencies as a coach.

a good coach would have benched TQ at the first signs of an issue instead of letting him just keep doing it. we do have some semblance of a bench.
