We average 7 ypc last year on the jet sweep. It was an effective weapon, people just didn’t like the way it looked.

I have no idea why. It looked damned good to me when we were winning with it against UF and Auburn.

What play in particular worked well against them?

Assuming you mean Bama, this Hitch/Go RPO/POP play did okay.

Yea it worked great against Miss St and Alabama didn't it

It worked a hell of a lot better than any running plays we ran the previous few years against Bama. And as I've said before, our longest rush in history against Bama came on a fake jet sweep run by D Williams.

This is the broader point I was trying to make. The motion makes your offense more multiple without sacrificing predictability. So you can do the same things from personnel and formations that are comfortable without having playbook overload

His offense worked a hell of a lot better against Bamas than Einsmingers did. Solid logic.

Jet sweep with Dillon was a solid play last year.
And Gage. Once he learned how to run them.

One thing Gage would do that gave me flashbacks to JJ was drift away from LoS. JJ used to do that on option plays; you can't run away from LoS as QB on option, it completely screws the RB. But enough of memory lane.

A slight variation in Canada's design on jet sweeps is the first cut is supposed to be just off the OTs hip, not out wide. In that sense it's like a QB read-option. Gage had a tendency to string it out. Not running away from LoS, and off the tackle's ankle, kept them from being big losses.

And therein lies the "won't work in the SEC" comments. Most jet sweeps, like Spurrier ran at UF, are meant to go to the boundry and are 3yds behind center. Canada's (and others) are just outside runs, not wide and hence not so long developing. They are actually faster developing, if run correctly, than your standard GT pull, or the toss dive for that matter.

"so won't work against SEC speed" was proven wrong in it's execution, and it is wrong in theory. It is designed to be a relatively quick hitting run play, off-tackle, based on DEs tendency and pre-snap read of S/LBs.

Not a long-developing "sweep" to the sideline. However, even when Gage would drift away from LoS, and go wide instead of making the designed cut, it still worked fairly well. When it didn't, Gage would lose more yards than he was supposed to because he'd drift backwards.

WR's aren't RB's. Why injure them?

Our offensive staff met with the Rams this past offseason per coach O in order for us to pick up on some of the concepts the Rams run that LSU might could utilize. However, after watching the Rams and Raiders last night, I saw some of the specific formations and motions that Canada ran at LSU being utilized by the Rams, not just your generic jet sweeps. I’m thinking LSU also shared Canada’s playbook concepts with the Rams for them to add to their arsenal. Just something interesting I noticed.

there's lots of holes in this theory.

- then why throw to RBs?
- the only injury I saw on a jet sweep was Bama's Fitzpatrick.
- so should WRs fall down after catching the ball?
- being a RB is an immunization to injury behind the line?
- so fear of injury is reason to limit touches by your best athletes? No coach in the history of coaching has ever thought that.

Well, this is a really dumb question.

I’m just saying Canada was ahead of the curb in terms of exploiting defenses with a way to get easy yards on early downs...

Ahead of the curb? Florida was running this with Percy Harvin over 10 years ago, it's nothing new or revolutionary.

Danny missed multiple big gains down field unfortunately.

Yeah, we missed multiple big gains, but Chark was the problem, not Etling. Look at your own link - with about 3:30 in the first Etling drops a dime on Chark in the end zone. Chark slows down and shies left. The ball would have hit Chark in the head had he kept running.

Then, with about 12 minutes left in the third, Etling throws a bomb to Chark. Chark is open, but does not adjust AT ALL to the ball until it is almost on him. It still hits him right in the bread basket, and he drops it.

Etling threw another deep ball down the right sidelines to Chark that was just off his fingertips. It was a nice throw, but that is the nature of bombs. You will miss half of them if you're throwing it well. Also Etling missed Dillon on a very late developing deep cross - not a bomb, but it would have been a big play.

It's amazing how the rant narrartives start and grow. Etling played a good game against Bama. Canada called a great game. Chark failed to convert two bombs that would have made that into a pick'em game.

I hated Canada's offense last year. I think having some of those plays in your pocket are needed. But the gimmicky motion every play drove me crazy.

Now I think jet sweeps, option, screens, WR screens, RB pitches, more quick slants need to be added to the scheme when playing the big boys. I'm hoping these sort of plays will be added.

The quick timing routes, hooks, slants, need to be used often, just get the ball in the WR hands in a one on one space. Don't continually run the ball on 1st down up the middle and then force a 3rd and long for Burrow. The OL can't handle the time that it takes to run the longer routes and Burrow can have a tendency to hold the ball too long.

Short timing routes need to be implemented to help Burrow and the OL.
I do like that Burrow is still getting under center and not always in shotgun. Hopefully it helps sell some play action pass eventually.

I like the overload one one side every once in a while. Remember in the 07 NC when Crowton did that and we threw a quick pass to Dickson on the weak side for a TD?

One of my biggest gripes with LSU's offense, past and current, is lack of misdirection. If LSU's alignment says they're going left, they're going left. Defenses just flow to the strong side with very little concern of misdirection.

Canada exploited that some, but now we are back to the same old shite.
