Jay Johnson on midweek games: “It’s the most important game of the season. And I don't differentiate between that for a number of reasons. I think if you're trying to create self discipline and focus on the task at hand—the task at hand is this game.”

“When you look at external factors: the RPI doesn't differentiate between conference and non-conference. This is a team that’s gonna win 40+ games.”

Wally would've only been about 6 or 7 yrs old, and alive.

At Louisiana Tech is the most important game out of the first 9, I don't care what day of the week it is played. I understand that midweek games mean less during SEC play but when 10 of your 13 non-conference weekend games are against Maine, Towson, Southern, and Bethune-Cookman, the midweek games do matter. The SOS after 16 games is going to be pretty awful (even with Texas) so the record needs to be stellar (14-2 minimum).

And a major reason why LSU made the tournament.

Midweek games "don't matter" if you're 20-10 in the SEC

Midweek games absolutely matter if you're a middle of the road team fighting for the postseason. That's the point I'd make in all the midweek bitchfest threads we'd have.

Good Lord. Do teams just not want to travel down here? At least get a P5 from up North to come here for some reps

You can't predict the future, though. So, midweek games matter until they don't.

Some meaningless games to peak at today:

DBU - Texas Tech
Wichita St - Oklahoma
Baylor - Houston Baptist
ECU - Campbell
SD St - UC Irvine
S Alabama - Southern Miss
Southeastern - ULL
Samford - Alabama St
Missouri St - Oral Roberts

I don't think many have ever disagreed with that. Of course those games are more important if you have a losing SEC record.
Moscona still thinks they don’t matter in this scenario.

Midweek games became an issue most when we started missing on pitchers and our depth went to shite. We didn’t have any choice but to throw half the staff to get through 9 innings.

Midweek games became an issue when LSU was an average team. They lost a bunch of them and they got hammered in conference by the upper echelon. Under Mainieri when LSU was REALLY good, we won midweek games because we were good.

You only have to say they don't matter when you routinely lose them.

I mean Arkansas has series with Illinois St, Southeastern, UIC, and Grambling. That's just how it is.

Vandy has series against Wagner, Army, and Hawaii
Tenn has Georgia Southern, Iona, Rhode island
MSU has Princeton and Northern Kentucky
UGA has Albany, Akron, Lipscomb
A&M has Fordham, Penn, Santa Clara

Every single SEC team has at minimum 2 if not 3 OOC cupcake weekend series. And all have at least 1 and at most 2 "tough" OOC series.

Southeastern - ULL

Heard on the radio this morning that ULL is throwing their Friday night guy tonight. Apparently he got roughed up in his first start and coach wanted to give him a few innings to bounce back.

Not relevant to this thread at all, just interesting (at least to me).

I remember one year LSU was playing mid-week game at Zephyr (maybe Wally Pontiff classic) and late in game Ben McDonald came to pitch relief. I was quite surprised because he was theirs starting ace in weekend games. Not sure who LSU coach was then but I didn’t like that decision. McDonald was really over worked and hurt his career.
