From Cody Worsham:

quote:

Jay Johnson on his approach to midweek games: “It’s the most important game of the season.”

Says that approach is key to “creating self discipline and focusing on the task at hand.”
quote:

It’s the most important of the season, the focus doesn’t drop, the rpi doesn’t know the difference between midweek and not - JJ

Moscona triggered af.

I'm interpreting this as "the next game is always the most important game of the season"

Paul isn't going to like that.

He goes into more detail about the mentality and RPI not giving a shite when a game is played. It’s more than just the “next game” cliche.

Gotcha, well a road game at La Tech is probably going to be our most important midweek game for RPI purposes, but I still think he knows that, realistically, as long as you don't drop 5+ midweek games and win 20 SEC games, you'll be fine when postseason seeding comes out. But I do appreciate him instilling a mentality into the team to care about every game we play. But as fans, we can still call a spade a spade.

He's still going to experiment but it's more about his mindset and not letting the team overlook midweek games.

The thing is LSU was really good in midweek games under Paul when he cared. LSU went about two full seasons without losing a midweek game during that 2013-era. Once Paul checked out and stopped caring was when LSU really started being awful in midweek games. There's no doubt Paul's lack of focus and mental sharpness at the end of his career bled into the team's performance on the field.

I dont Think he spend every arm in the bullpen mid week, but I like His approach

Don’t turn your focus on and off. Because you may not be able to turn it back on

There’s lots of reasons for this game to matter. And it goes well beyond the W/L column. That was the point most of us tried to make when this whole argument started.

Midweek games became an issue most when we started missing on pitchers and our depth went to shite. We didn’t have any choice but to throw half the staff to get through 9 innings.

What a breathe of fresh air.

Didn’t realize how fricking stale Maineri was
Thanks for ‘09, but glad he is gone

Paul did Johnnywholestaff all the time in the midweek even when LSU was good and had depth. I clicked on two random 2013 midweek games and LSU used 7 pitchers in both of them.

LSU used 10 pitchers in a 4-0 win over Grambling in 2013.

They still want to develop starters that can go deep into games. Midweek games will allow for tha You get Hellmers and Lansville good starting experience in the midweek and we go into next season with a good idea of the weekend rotation.

We used to schedule Grambling almost exclusively as one of the games of a two-mid-week-game week. Was that 1 of 2 that week?

But yeah, we've been Johnny Wholestaffing pretty much the entire run of Alan Dunn.

2 innings in that Grambling game. I don't recall many midweek games in Mainieri's tenure where the starter went longer than a few innings. Maybe Aaron Nola his freshman year was extended early on when they were grooming him to be in the SEC weekend rotation?

In LSUs first midweek game in 2013 vs Lamar, Cody Glenn went 5 innings. 4 other guys threw including Cotton.

Midweek games, especially early ones, are great for giving guys experience and seeing what they can do in an game situation, to know who you can rely on later in the season when it really matters. With that being said, it is refreshing to see Coach Johnson's mentality on wanting to win them all.
