Or DVH and Vitello hoarding over 50?

I disagree with you on the need for a cap. I think it still serves a purpose. I just don't feel like typing out all the reasons why.

As recently as like 2024 Tennessee had around 50 guys in their program. They would consistently have like 8 or 9 guys a year redshirting off the roster.

This is kinda weird pointing out LSU like this. It kinda implies other schools are able to compete with MLB teams.

No it doesn’t.

I think you might have just misinterpreted what they said tbh

Given the level of competition in the SEC, JJ is making an excellent point. You can make decent NIL money, play against great competition under quality coaches and live on a college campus for 1-3 years. Then go get drafted as a better, more mature player.

OR

Get all the money up front, hope you can hang on to it, and make $20,000 to $30,000 a year riding a bus between Midland, Amarillo and Springfield for 1-3 years.

Its not the slam dunk decision that it used to be.

And I feel like this has always been a big reason why college baseball can’t get the ratings and support nationwide from the fans of most teams. The majority of your elite level high school prospects go straight to the pros and never touch a college field. Whereas the best of the best has to play college football and basketball before going pro. I just wonder if baseball would implement the same rule and the elite baseball prospects have to play college ball for at least a couple of years if the popularity of college baseball would increase around the country.

Maybe a little, but they won't solve the problem of miserable weather in the midwest and northeast (big baseball regions) for the first two months of the season. Schools in those areas are not going to invest much in their programs to have nearly empty stadiums because it's freezing when you can actually play.

It's not great, but the bus travel is not nearly what it used to be. Many levels are only traveling once a week. Play a six game series, travel, then play another six game series, alternating home and away.

No, I didn’t. I’m good. I think other people might, though. That’s all.

On the rare occasion that I ride a bus these days, I realize that bus rides are for the young.

Which of the 6 are we losing to the draft ?

Logan Schmidt
Jensen Hirschkorn
Malachi Washington
Nathaniel Davis
Anthony Murphy
Dominic Santarelli

Would love to able to get a few long shots to campus this season

Maybe not this one.

But I think Lucas Nawrocki is one. I'm hoping we get Cooper Sides and CJ Weinstein to campus but I can also see either of them going pro.

those you mentioned and probably nawrocki and sides. One of those top HS outfielders gets on campus imo.

losing 8 players 2 years in a row would seem devastating considering looking at the other top 5 schools only lost 3 on average

Not sure if it was purposeful, but this is such a disingenuous way to frame the way we recruit HS.

We purposely sign several highly ranked HS players knowing 99% chance that they’re going to go pro, in the hopes we get lucky with that 1%. Jay isn’t selling out for Logan Schmidt to make it onto campus. There’s no harm in this approach, especially when your class is 24 signees deep like our current one is. It implies large loss of top end players to MLB.

On “average” lol of course that’s true on average because there’s only so many top 100 HS players and there’s only so many selection slots in a given draft. While we’re on the high end here, it’s certainly not without context. Other schools lost a large number of HS signees to draft last year. Vandy lost 5, A&M lost 5, and Texas lost 4. Miami has 2 HS signees that rank in the top 8 of all draft eligible players in this year’s draft class. I can’t imagine they are selling out for those kids to somehow make it to campus, but they’re at least giving themselves a shot.

I think what he might be hinting at is we are spending our money in the portal this time around, not with high school kids. If they want to come to LSU because they want to be at LSU, then great, but we arent going throw $500k their way to come here vs. sign pro. We are obviously spending some money in the portal to get proven players and Jay probably doesnt want a situation he has to commit a ton of money to a high school kid who isnt 100% sure how much of a contributor they would be right away. Better to spend $500k of sure fire portal player than $500k to get a kid to sign with MLB but could never be a major contributor here either. From what was said around the Schmidt situation, we gave him a pretty healthy deal to sign here over pro, it wasnt as much as his pro offer, but enough to make that decision to come here vs. go pro last year at minimum. I think he is hinting we simply arent going to be making those promises to incoming freshmen any more.

I think you filled in A LOT of that with guesses and what you want it to mean…

It could mean that, but he damn sure don’t say that.

I could see a scenario where neither JUCO pitcher is on LSU's campus next season. I think Hayden Morris will go pro. He still has a chance to sign with the Yankees from last year's draft. And Osbolt could go back to Walters St for another year.

I'm not all that enamored with Morris. A ton of walks and overall just took a big step back from his freshman year. With limited time to fix control issues (part of the conversation from another thread), he's a guy that's probably better off taking a $125K and heading to Florida or Arizona.

Hayden Morris decommitted about 45 minutes ago.
